Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has no idea if he'll be able to afford to keep closer Francisco Cordero but he's sure going to try. Melvin met with Cordero Monday morning for a cup of coffee to tell him how much he appreciated the job the big right-hander has done closing games. "I told him, 'We wouldn't be where we are now without you. I just want to let you know we appreciate it,' " said Melvin. "He said he hadn't been in this position before and was really enjoying it. He likes it here, likes the ball club."

cordero has been in that poistion....in 2004 rangers were in thick of the division race, and he blew a few key games down the stretch to oakland and we lost the division by a game or two

"we"

i love when clubs say we can't afford to keep a player... maybe instead of buying a luxury car or another house the owner could use the teams revenue to resign players who have played well and are the very reason that revenue was earned

September 19, 2007  10:42 AM ET

BCOLTRINARI...to be fair to the Cubs they have already wasted $300 million on other players...

September 19, 2007  10:55 AM ET

hey truth, bcoltrinari isnt talkin'' bout the cubs, he said clubs, u know organizations. quite frankly this matter shouldnt even concern the cubs, its the brewers. and quite frankly i believe they will be able to keep cordero, i mean if he really loves where he is at and doin' wat he does, then he shouldnt worry about the money should he?

September 19, 2007  11:29 AM ET

truth the cubs did spend and they are on the cusp of making the playoffs. suave very few players care more about the team than they do about the money. sure they say o i love playing here and that they can't really picture playing somewhere else but then when free agency hits all of a sudden money becomes a big issue.

September 19, 2007  11:43 AM ET

The Brewers Should, with the capital S, resign him. Young club, not Cub, with a future if they don't screw it up.

September 19, 2007  11:52 AM ET

When you tell a guy he is the reason for the teams success how can you then go and not sign him? The Brewers must not enjoy being contenders or something.

September 19, 2007  12:09 PM ET

They will sign him, no worries there.

September 19, 2007  01:32 PM ET

The TRUTH realizes that BCOLTRINARI was talking about CLUBS...The TRUTH enjoys using real examples to back up his salacious commentary.

Now you LOCK IT UP!

September 19, 2007  01:33 PM ET

You never know plan b. Good pen help is hard to find these days so when a good arm does hit the market the bidding will begin and the Brewers aren't willing to spend what the Rangers, Yankees, Mets and Sox of the world can and will.

September 19, 2007  03:08 PM ET

Ah, you mean market price.
Well teams had better start using some of the money they are getting or they will get no pity, and no fans, eventually.

September 19, 2007  03:17 PM ET

The Brewers cant afford him theyll be as many as 10 clubs interested and theyll be throwing big money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 19, 2007  03:32 PM ET

Macadamien- this is why as a team you try to offer players an extension a year or 2 before they get to free agency. If they accept it then great you have them signed at below market value. If they decline make sure the media finds out so that player can't say well I love playing here because everyone will then know they are only it in for the money.

September 19, 2007  03:33 PM ET

Look at what the Mets did. They signed Wright and Reyes to deals years before they hit free agency and they have them locked up for years at a reasonable price. Smart baseball by Minaya and the Mets brass.

September 19, 2007  04:44 PM ET

A successful post-season is the key to his retention.

September 19, 2007  05:46 PM ET

The Real Truth does not speak in 3rd person. The poser Truth is a lie. A worthless troll who has nothing better to do but make stupid posts like these.

September 19, 2007  09:17 PM ET

Red Sox could go after him and move Papelbon to the rotation.

30,
