El Duque may miss playoffs

Orlando Hernandez is expected to wear a protective boot on his ailing right foot for up to 10 days. The footwear will keep him off a mound for perhaps the rest of the regular season, and leaves his availability for the division series in question since El Duque has logged only three innings since Aug. 30.

That's presuming that the Mets actually hold on and make the playoffs.

Here we go again..... This is what you get when you bank on ancient starters. I hope MInaya finally learns and makes some real changes in the offseason. They need a real ace under 35, and at least two power arms in the pen. Schowenweiss and Mota are mop up pitchers at best. Assuming the Mets get to the postseason (doubtful) they will get torn up in the late innings. Being owned by Philly is one thing, but getting beaten by a AAA team in a half empty stadium is disturbing and pathetic.

This is a disaster

September 19, 2007  10:05 AM ET

He always wears down. But worn down or not he is a big game pitcher. Never count El Duque out.

September 19, 2007  10:10 AM ET

The Mets should have backed off and not overused him in the regular season. The man is arguably one of the greatest post season pitchers out there. Maybe limiting his innings in the beginning of the year would have helped him down the road. Then again the Mets are poised to lose the division in the next few days the way they are playing. Philly will not be denied. Maybe the media should start to ready their apologies for Jimmy Rollins. And if the Phillies were to win the WS would that make Rollins prediction the greatest of all time (even better than Namath's)?

September 19, 2007  10:52 AM ET

the mets need pitchin' and thats whats been killing the mets the past years. El Duque is a good pitcher for the mets and i just cant see the mets makin' the playoffs or gettin' thru the first round without him.

September 19, 2007  11:29 AM ET

LOL @ mets there suckihng now and their pitching is getting worse.

September 19, 2007  11:41 AM ET

If this is the guy they ave to count on then the Mets are done. All of their pitchers suck and most of the team is old has beens. Is the NL now the old timers shoftball league or what? What a joke.

September 19, 2007  11:49 AM ET

Unfortunately for the Mets they are in the same spot they were last year. Too many old injured pitchers and no John Maine or Oliver Perez type pitcher to carry them deep into the playoffs.

September 19, 2007  12:05 PM ET

The Mets problem in a word is: No bullpen. Okay that was two words but todays pitchers, by either design or because they just can't anymore, do not go further than 6 or maybe 7 innings. Teams, therefore, need a stronger bullpen then in the good old days. The Mets pitchers are either on pitch counts, for whatever reason, or just old and don't have the stamina to go deep into games, so the Mets depend on their bullpen even more than other teams. The Mets bullpen in a word: Sucks.

September 19, 2007  12:08 PM ET

The Mets will be nosed out by the Phillies.

September 19, 2007  01:32 PM ET

With starters going fewer innings per start you need a good bullpen these days. The market will soon shift to reflect this as middle relievers and closers will be paid a lot more money. And even the dreaded lefty specialist (there isn't a better gig in all of sports- you come in to get 1 guy out and you are a hero) will be getting outrageous money. Teams might become more likely to convert some of their starting pitching prospects into relief guys after seeing the results the Sox have gotten with Papelbon and the Yanks with Joba.

The Satchel Paige of my generation needs to retire now. If any team picks him up next season, the G.M. would need to get his head examined.

September 19, 2007  01:52 PM ET

Hell, I had this guy back in '43!!!!!!

September 19, 2007  02:14 PM ET

yankees fans took crap all season long about the mets...now it appears justice will soon be served.

Minaya should lobby for a 140 game season during the offseason.

September 19, 2007  02:39 PM ET

Meet the Mets, Greet the Mets, Step right up and Smack the METS....Go Phillies

The latest updated reports show that the AL is almost locked up as far as who is making the playoffs. All 4 teams (Angels, Indians, Sox and Yanks) have over a 99% chance of making the playoffs with only the winner of the AL East and Wildcard still somewhat undecided. The NL however is much harder to call. No team is even 90% likely to make the playoffs. The Mets lead the NL at about 87% but the Central is almost a 50/50 toss up between the Cubs and Brewers. And The Phillies keep fighting to get in whether it be by taking the WC from the Padres or even somehow stealing the NL East from the Mets. And Theo might join Minaya in petitioning for that 140 game season should the Yankees overtake the Sox in the last 2 weeks of the season.
