Will Irish block QB's transfer?
While some issues remain unresolved concerningquarterback Demetrius Jones' expected transfer from Notre Dame to Northern Illinois, at least one thing was clear Tuesday: Jones' trip to DeKalb on Saturday was more than a weekend visit. Ten minutes after NIU coach Joe Novak's weekly news conference -- in which Novak reiterated that he has yet to meet face-to-face with Jones -- Jones and Huskies linebacker Phil Brown, a former Morgan Park teammate, were seen entering the Yordon Center's first-floor academic corridor that holds classrooms, a computer lab and various administrative offices. Meanwhile, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said he finally talked with Jones on Monday night about his abrupt departure from the Irish. ''It was a cordial conversation,'' Weis said. ''We cleared up what was going on, and he said he's moved on. I wished him well, and that was about it.'' Less clear is when Notre Dame coaches knew Jones was leaving and whether the school will release him from his scholarship. Weis said the scholarship issue is handled by the two schools' athletic directors.

That would be very vindictive to release him. Unfortuantely, this is what college coaches do. For example look at Brandon Warren. He has been trying to transfer from Florida State to Tennessee for over a year, and Bowden will not release him from scholarship.
I hope for D.J.'s sake Weis will release him and let him go play for Northern Illinois.

I meant to say that it would be vindictive to not release him.

Notre dame has no reason to block it. It would be bad press for them. Northern Illinois is not really in their conference or a rival or anything.
Florida state and tennessee, now thats a differenet matter. those teams play each other

If he would have been a man about it I'm sure this woudn't be a story.
Not run away like a baby that didn't get his way.
Look at Z. Frazer who left before the season started. He went to the coaches asked to be released and everything went smooth.
EJ - I just wanted to know because I don't remember michigan's last bowl win.

It wasn't that long ago. Only 4 years, we beat Chris Leak and the Gators and that should count for something.

In this specific situation Notre Dame should not release the former player from his scholarship. If Jones had met with Coach Weis and explained his desire to play QB for another school then history clearly shows Coach Weis would have granted a release. Coach Weis has allowed many players to leave and attend other schools. However, the facts are Jones practiced with the team all week, including Thursday, did not show up or contact the coaching staff, did not board the bus for the Michigan game, and enrolled at another school. To grant a release under those circumstances would set a bad precedent. The only good reason to release Jones would be if Coach Weis could use the scholarship, this season, on a current player who needs financial assistance.

Dkzone...not to be critical...but ND isn't in a conference which means there is a possibility they could end up on the ND schedule...I mean if UNC could be on it last year and Duke on it this year...anything is possible.

It would be a big mistake to keep Jones, but you can see why the ND people would be puttin' in overtime to try to keep him: whether or not they like him to play QB, it looks bad - really bad - for a ND player to leave now. It could start a nasty trend, especially if they're looking at 0-4 after Saturday's game. But it's better in the long run. So buck up, Charlie, and get yourself an enchirito at the Bell.

Jones' first mistake was going to ND in the first place. My pops always told me that ND was always one of the most racist programs for the longest time which is why he still hates them to this day.
ND made their choice at quarterback and decided to let Jones ride the bench. If they didn't want him, why would they try to mess up his future? I don't care how he went about leaving, this is still a kid who wants to play college football. For them to try to stop his dream would put an exclamation point at the end of everything my pops told me about ND!

Maybe he knows something the rest of the ncaa is figuring out....Notre dame is lame as a two legged mule.
and he doesn't want to spend his college career as a backup on a whack squad.

Really? Not since the Fiesta Bowl in '99, I don't think.
Nothing wrong with wanting out of a sinking ship, especially when your job is to keep the seat warm for Clausen. More power to Demetrius Jones.
