Hitting coach on Harper: 'Wow'

08:20 AM ET 08.27 | Curiosity had a chance to meet a measure of promise Thursday in Washington. In his first trip to Washington and first day spent with the Nationals, Harper made clear both why the Nationals selected him first overall and his nonchalant comfort with the attention heaped upon him for it. In the afternoon, he clobbered 12 home runs during batting practice, one in the top deck, where only bombs by Adam Dunn have ventured, and several into the bullpen in left center field. The first word Nationals hitting coach Rick Eckstein said when asked about the display: "Wow." "It felt like home," Harper said. "I'm like a little kid in a candy store."

Let's see him do that against MLB pitching before we induct him in the Hall

August 27, 2010  08:38 AM ET

That's impressive, but it's still just batting practice. He's still a ways away, and the Nationals know it.

He is still a pup, Don't be aw-struck yet untill he does it against the leagues best.

Key Words - BATTING PRACTICE.

agreed. i saw part of the press conference the Nats had with him yesterday; at least he wasn't wearing all that eye black....that just looks stupid.

agree...its as stupid looking as all those big necklaces that player are wearing these days. not like a gold chain...i'm talking about those silly roap type things they're all sporting these days.

yep, those look foolish too. guess i'll never understand the need to wear jewelry while you're trying to play ball.

Even though he will most likly not play cather in the pros (which is dumb). He's gonna make you say Joe Mauer who?

August 27, 2010  09:34 AM ET

Too bad he won't be facing Nationals pitching when he gets called up...........

August 27, 2010  10:06 AM ET

Did he use a real bat, or was he swinging an aluminum stick?

August 27, 2010  10:08 AM ET

Ask Allen Iverson what he think about practice.

I heard that he used nothing other than a whale's ****. That, or Peter Gammons had another stroke while reporting that.

I remember hearing the same thing about a young "pup" named Jeff Francoer...they could not wait to get him into the lineup for the Braves....best hitter ever so they said...where is he now...been with at least 3 teams in 6 years? Can hit bombs when he connects....his problem...is connection!
