08:38 AM ET 08.29 | Five months ago, UM's website called Nevin Shapiro ``an ardent, devoted, intense supporter.'' A student lounge was named in his honor. Now, facing years in prison for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme, Shapiro is writing a book about the UM football program in which he alleges former Canes players committed NCAA violations, said his attorney, Maria Elena Perez. Perez said Shapiro told the federal government about the violations, which are alleged to be major, but it did not investigate because ``that's not their area.''

Hot babies? That is just sick.
Mixed friends? Well yeah, my friends are mixed up. So what?

August 29, 2010  09:26 AM ET

Interesting...but whether UM is guilty of violations or not, I am thoroughly sick of folks like Mr. Shapiro. Exploitative slime like this has no business near any college campus or program. It is scum like Mr. Shapiro that is destroying college athletics.

Good call. What happened to all the fine, upstanding spammers around here?

August 29, 2010  09:48 AM ET

This spam stuff is getting scary. "bizboysell"???

Agreed. This guy gave $300K of stolen money to the athletic dept. Uncle Luke paid players for hits.

I have a lot of respect for what Randy Shannon is doing especially considering the culture he's trying to change.

What's that line from "The Natural"? (Can't help it; I'm a movie buff):

'Some mistakes we never stop paying for.'

Keep in mind also they're allegations by a felon (or soon to be), and Shapiro could be just looking for some sort of leverage to ease his sentencing. I'm not rushing to judgement on this one yet.

And yes, yes, I KNOW it's the University of Miami. I could bash them today, but choose not to. There's plenty of my fellow Hurricane haters to do that for me.

Run, Randy, RUN!!

They are lucky to have Shannon there. I respect the man too.

Hope the NCAA gives them the USC treatment. After all, doesn't matter that none of the current players or staff were there when violations occurred.... right?

August 29, 2010  10:21 AM ET

As for the argument that the accusations are from an accused felon.... well, that apparently doesn't matter to the NCAA either.

Hi, EWO. I'm with you on this observation. The thing that wakes me up in the middle of the night is how many other programs are wating to be besmirched like this. The Ohio State University? Notre Dame? The University of Texas? et al...

This sort of criminal boosterism is now so endemic in college athletics that ALL programs, big, medium, and small, are suspect. It's like termites in your home's 2X4's. It's just a matter of someone ripping out the drywall.

Oh so if Pete Caroll taking another job RIGHT before the sanctions come crashing down should mean USC's exempt from sanctions?

Answer: Every single one of them.

It was two upstanding gentlemen like Mr. Shapiro that helped to leave a permanent black mark on our '93 National Title. It was thanks to the efforts of Mr. Raul Bey and his lackey, Mr. Nate Cebrun, that Coach Spurrier was able to dub us "Free Shoes University." While even I get a laugh out of that one-liner, the underlying implications sting to this day.
