The agent for Hawks free agent forward-center Esteban Batista said late last night that his client had declined an offer to sign with the Celtics. Agent Marc Cornstein had indicated yesterday afternoon that the Celtics, Charlotte, Phoenix, and Indiana had made offers to the 6-10, 270-pounder. Cornstein wouldn't say why his client had turned down the Celtics, or which team Batista was leaning toward.

I hope he signs with Indiana. I really like him. He's got a lot of skills for a player just 24

This guy hardly played last year for a team that won 30 games.....was he hurt or something? How big of an issue could this be?

September 20, 2007  04:24 PM ET

The Celts and any other NBA team will live without Batista

September 20, 2007  04:49 PM ET

rather have mutumbo

Hopefully he becomes a Raptor along with Calderon and Garbajosa. They have a real international flavour. They don't have much cap space though. They could use some depth at centre.

phoenix could sure add another big man in their line up

OK, I don't get it, Celtics nation. If the owners are already willing to go into luxury tax territory to put together a big 3? Why don't they go all the way and go for a higher tier of players and make a real stab at the championship? No point wasting luxury tax money if you can't get the championship.

B-ball Nut, I totally agree.

You spend to win. Otherwise, be cheap like the Bobcats and get an early vacation after the 82-game season.

Batista was close to dominant in a game against the US...that being said he also didn't have great talent around him...he could be a decent player in a few years
