Heralded USC frosh off to slow start

USC's 2007 recruiting class was judged by many to be the nation's best after Joe McKnight signed with the Trojans. The speedy running back from Louisiana reminded USC coaches of Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and Coach Pete Carroll planned to utilize him in much the same way. McKnight's impact, however, has thus far been negligible. Asked Wednesday if USC had seen the real Joe McKnight, the 6-foot, 180-pound freshman said, "No." McKnight, sidelined for several weeks of training camp because of a knee bruise, carried six times for 26 yards and caught one pass for eight yards in the opener against Idaho. Last Saturday against Nebraska, playing without a knee brace, McKnight carried once for five yards. He also caught a pass but fumbled.

boo hoo?

September 20, 2007  08:39 AM ET

That's ok. By the time we stomp (L)oser (S)tate (U)niversity in their own back yard, he'll be hittin' on all 8 cylinders!

Take that to the bank!

September 20, 2007  08:56 AM ET

This is a non-story. He's a freshman playing a position that is loaded with talent. He obviously is not going to get the touches he needs to get into a rhythm, so yeah he is going to struggle.

If he wanted more than 12 touches in 2 games, he should not have gone to 'SC.

Hey Trojan...we both gotta get there first, but if LSU plays USC this weekend, we would hand you your ****. You know it too.

Oh and the play on LSU's abbreviation is old, over played, and I've heard it all my life from UT and Bama fans. Doesn't bother me m8.

LSU is for real, USC is hyped by media pimps every year, and LSU will have a hard time getting to the National Championship with the teams we have to play inner conference. You know we have 4 SEC teams in the "Power 16" rankings, and there are only two PAC-10 teams. LSU stomped #6 VATech in the ground, and you guys whip up on #14 Nebraska, and still get the higher power ranking. LOL...media pimps baby. Gotta love em.

September 20, 2007  09:34 AM ET

He will be fine, I remember Reggie doing pretty much the same thing. It doesn't help that Sarkisian is a horrible playcaller and JD Booty is garbage.

September 20, 2007  09:39 AM ET

Ahahah...Booty....where have I heard that name? OH yeah....the twin trouble making tandem at LSU during the DeNardo era.....any relation? :D

The whining RB will be fine, he'll get his touches.

September 20, 2007  10:02 AM ET

Who cares? The horses in the Nebraska game were Moody and Washington and they were very productive.

September 20, 2007  10:19 AM ET

Wait, college football is different from high school football and takes some time for some 18 year olds to adjust to? Say it ain't so!

September 20, 2007  11:18 AM ET

Reggie Bush didnt get much playing time in his first year either but he turned out to be one of the greatest players in CF history. On the other hand I understand why LSU fans are downing him on this blog. USC went into their backyard and took the most valuable recruit in America, but dont feel bad LSU we did it to Texas too.

September 20, 2007  11:30 AM ET

I saw Joe play HS ball, I saw what the highlight tapes don't show - I said it here first - predicted his injury - he should have stayed home and took a redshirt, and then maybe he could handle running in LSU's rotation. I hope for his sake that USC does not try riding that horse or he'll come up LAME.

September 20, 2007  11:58 AM ET

Ummm...we have so much depth at running back I doubt we would have used him for a few years. Which is probably why he went somewhere else. He also appears to be a self centered whiner that is out to boost his own personal stats. Have fun with that....but I'm sure you're used to it.

September 20, 2007  12:57 PM ET

Behind Keiland Williams and Jacob Hester I wouldn't call the L.S.U. running back situation deep. I mean you also got Holiday but at 5'6'' how much of a work horse he could be.

I respect the cockyness Fornacis but to say that you didn't need Joe McKnight is laughable. Miles definitely would have played him as a true freshman.

September 20, 2007  01:18 PM ET

is anybody going to say he is better than noel devine again?

September 20, 2007  01:19 PM ET

18 years old... a little more work and he'll be fine. LSU fans are so full of miles... I mean ****!

September 20, 2007  01:26 PM ET

EJ >

I said "we wouldn't have used him for a few freaking years". Never did I say we didn't need him. Before you pop off at the mouth in reply to my post read the damn post first please.

Oh...and the USC Coach and team reminds me of the old Star Trek episode "Trouble with Tribbles", but I would hardly compare Pete to Captain Kirk...such would be blasphemy.

September 20, 2007  01:33 PM ET

I'm a PAC 10 guy and you can take this to the bank USC will not beat LSU. They'll lose a classic that will be remembered forever. GEAUX TIGERS!!!

September 20, 2007  01:43 PM ET

67-12... That's a 85% winning percentage... I think Pete knows what he's talking about!

Oh yah... LSU beat a weak #6 VT @ Home!

Fight On Trojans!

September 20, 2007  01:49 PM ET

No, he's a bust. USC is madly overhyped; that's a terrible thing for a college football team with impressionable young athletes. Calling them a pro team is simply retarded.

I've heard Florida being compared to as the "USC of the East"; that's funny. Not only is Florida the most recent national champion, but they're nailing all the top recruits while a lot of the great USC recruits have bailed. Urban Meyer is also playing in a bigger spotlight with a more serious atmosphere.

I got news for you ever-passionate and loyal USC fans: Florida IS the new USC!!!

September 20, 2007  01:56 PM ET

Do you idiots realize that LSU is playing the University of South Carolina this weekend? LSU and Southern Cal do not play each other this year (unless they meet in a bowl game, in which case, LSU would dominate).

September 20, 2007  02:27 PM ET

wow, people making a judgment about a player 2 games into his freshmen season.......hmmm he should just quit since he didn't win the Heisman in 2 games. Give the kid a chance to play. They played a horrible Idaho team and an average Nebraska team. let the kid learn

Better yet, have all of the USC fans who think he is a bust tell him to transfer. Oklahoma will take him.. This kid will be a star in the very near future.
