UNC investigates possible violation
North Carolina is conducting a review to determine whether NCAA rules were broken during a basketball recruit's campus visit last weekend. Guard Iman Shumpert of Oak Park, Ill., told the Observer he spoke with and played pickup basketball against NBA players Raymond Felton, Sean May and Marvin Williams during his official visit. All three played for North Carolina's 2005 NCAA championship team. "They were just using different ways to try and persuade me to go there, especially Sean May," Shumpert told the InsideCarolina Web site, whose report led to the school's review.

maybe you should have added the word "recently" to your post then. And since then he has been in some **** car dealership commercials and rode the bench because of injury. Hopefully this will be the season for the Cats.

Agreed heelyeah....May might have had a good junior year or whatever he was, but he's junk in the pros.

Maybe Roy should have just gone ahead and offered Shumpert his "graduation" gift early.

The Truth, Dean will always be apart of Carolina basketball. I think he still has an office in the Dean Dome and goes to "work" there a few times a week.

and you dont have to like him or anything but you gotta respect the man's track record with teams, much like I do with ole Coach K. He is a jerk but I know he is a good coach. I think Dean should be allowed to be involved with UNC for as long as he wants b/c he is the reason why Carolina blue is Carolina blue.
But this is a good move by the heels to go ahead and address the fact that "maybe" a violation occurred and it is better for the Heels to handle it than the NCAA start sticking their noses around.

and about May in the pros, he has barely played and only for a few years. Surely you dont think the first three years of someone's career defines them as an athlete. Im not saying he will be good but at the same time I think you are jumping the gun calling him garbage. If he never has a healthy year then i agree with you but lets see how he looks this year. I think he could be an effective post guy if he could get his **** straight.

Back in 1972, Dean Smith turned in NC State because David Thompson played a pickup game which involved an assistant coach and because he got a ride home from a guy that had nothing to do with the basketball team, other than having graduated from State. NC State got a one-year probation and didn't get to go to the NCAAs despite a 28-0 record.
Since this is obviously a much more severe infraction, considering "They were just using different ways to try and persuade me to go there, especially Sean May," I am sure that Dean Smith would want UNC to have an equal penalty imposed this time around.

Jennifer-
You should do yourself the favor of looking into this issue more. Williams and May are enrolled in classes currently at UNC to finish their degrees. There is no NCAA rule that bans a currently enrolled athlete from playing with or talking to a recruit. Furthermore, Felton, though not enrolled at UNC now, is allowed to play with recruits as long as he does not actively recruit them or persuade them towards attending the school they played for. Get over your bad blood from 20 years ago. If UNC and the NCAA determine a violation - which, by the way, UNC turned itself in for - has been committed, then a fitting penalty will be handed down; just like one was to NC State when they were found guilty. Move along.

Cster, the recruit said the NBA players were trying to 'persuade' him. Do yourself a favor and read the article.

Look up the entire article, not the blurb supplied by SI.com. May and Williams could not have committed an infraction - at all - because THEY ARE STUDENTS and THAT IS ALLOWED. Felton is the only one who COULD have erred and that is what they are investigating. If he did so, then UNC is guilty but considering the recruit was referring to the actions of all three at once, we have no idea what Felton did. It's on the News and Observer's website. Genius.

These kids need to learn to keep their mouths shut. Half the things these schools do is against the rules, so the recruits need to know what they should and shouldn't be able to tell the public. Just another dumb recruit putting their foot in their mouth. Like the recruit from USC last year that said Carrol put him on the phone with Reggie Bush, then tried to recant and say the media twisted his words.
What Da Bloodclott!!
