Coach K playing away from Team USA strength

07:51 AM ET 08.31 | If Team USA is "filled with hyper-athletic and versatile players," should we be seeing more of them? The squad's greatest strength is not its speed, its leaping ability or the varied skill sets of its players. Above all else, the Americans' greatest asset is their depth. While a team like Spain may have as many as eight NBA-caliber players, the American squad is loaded with NBA talent at every position. ... Yet thus far, in games against Team USA's most skilled opponents, Mike Krzyzewski has turned to a top-heavy rotation heavily dependent on its starters. It's an understandable tactic for most NBA and NCAA teams, but given how talented this roster is? And more importantly, how roughly congruent every non-Durant talent on the roster happens to be? It's ludicrous.

Just win, Bro.

The problem with the team there isn't enough big bodies and defense. They are getting worked down low but lack on intense defense. I think they will end up getting beat, too many close games.

lol...

Brazil's a good team, coach K's star player had his mojo going and the bench stunk it up so....he unleashed the durantula beacuse brazil had no answer for him, so why change the question? go USA....

He knows nothing about basketball. Coach K has been doing this at Duke for YEARS... It's called helping your players toughen up and improve through adversity. When he is really worried about an opponent, the US will play to its strengths - Just like Duke does.

That is why it is called COACHING... even at the NBA level players still can improve. Nobody knows that better than K/Boeheim.

What's team USA's strenght anyway. All we have out there repping the country is a bunch of second tier stars... aint to strength in that.

Agreed... not sure how this writer can use a skills depth comparison to argue playing the bench... REALLY, you think Brazil brought it within 2 cause Stephen Curry didn't get more minutes??? Coach K is putting the best team out there thats how you win games

The basketball world championships is not like the World Cup. I don't see many fan's, inside this country or outside, getting very excited. To me the Olympics is the bigger prize.

It seems like there are alot of tards in here who think they are better coaches than the guy who was the #1 choice when they had access to anyone in the world... yea you guys are probably right

Who wrote this short piece, a 10-year old? Talk about grammar problems galore? LOL

Wow. Coach K and Boeheim and D'antoni are the guys who brought Gold back to Team USA after the debacle in Athens. How are you going to question a man who has found a way to make an All-Star Team play like a REAL team?

You watch! He's going to win Gold at this World Championships WITHOUT the USA "A" Team and the naysayers will HAVE TO shut up after that!

August 31, 2010  10:22 AM ET

If Lamar Odom will stop tricking off lay-ups we'll be fine. C'mon L.O. save that for the games against Sacramento this is for your country!!!!!

August 31, 2010  10:37 AM ET

seems like a hard sell that in a tight game against a good opponent, coach K should be playing his scrubs more.

Yeah, no kidding, right? As it was we barely won with Durant playing 39 minutes.

August 31, 2010  10:55 AM ET

It's rather normal for coaches to want to limit their rotation to 8 or 9 deep. I'm not sure why that should change just because this is an "all-star" team. The writer must have written this tripe to get page hits.

I agree, i have watched every game is summer. Where are the talented big men? in the last 5 minutes of yesterdays game Odom turned the ball over three time and missed both shots he took. And he is the starting center on team USA. The only other big man that really plays in Kevin Love. Love is normally in the right place at the right time and a god team player but big man are the weakness of this years team USA.

i believe the point of the article is that there are no scrubs on the team and that the usa may be better off by letting fresh legs dictate the pace and also show the other team some varied looks and possibly find a favorable match-up.

and for comment #11: yes, maybe brazil brought it within 2 points because stephen curry didnt get more minutes. curry was seriously in the running for rookie of the year in the nba after challenging for player of the year in college, while playing at a very small school.

the international game is largely zone based which the usa typically has trouble with. and curry is a certified zone buster.

and for the guy who says that our team is just "second tier talent": durant is second-tier talent? the usa is the premier talent pool for basketball talent. if we cant leave our 10 best at home, take 11-25 and still win, there is a serious problem with team usa.

and for comment #2: seems like you have the most accurate assessment of the situation.
