Maturity the key to a new Shaq

07:57 AM ET 08.31 | Between giant leaps and a few laughs -- he may have attempted the accent -- during a tour of Boston, Shaquille O'Neal managed a few words about basketball. The big-money basketball question as the 15-time All Star hits town is how a career centerpiece will adapt to being a complementary part of a team replete with veteran stars. The man of many nicknames -- Diesel, The Big Aristotle, Shaq Fu, The Big Cactus, Superman, Shaq Daddy, The Big Shamrock -- is trying out something new with the Celtics: the Big Role Player, the Big Substitute. O'Neal understands that Boston will use his diminished skills in special situations. "I'm much older now," he said. "This team is good with or without me. Sometimes, in order to win, you have to sacrifice. I don't mind sacrificing. ... I'm not in a position to cause trouble or cause a ruckus. The reason why younger in my career I acted a fool is because they made me the CEO."

Is anybody REALLY expecting serious numbers from Shaq... he's a novelty... there are too many wholes in his game to make him effective now...

i still maintain that him signing there is a waste......sure he.might give them 10 minutes- problem with Boston is They have no backup for Pierce and no one to guard LBJ to take some pressure off pierce

It's impossible to build a team with no flaws. But if you have to choose between stacking the perimeter or post I'd take the post anytime so I think Boston did the right thing in adding the O'Neals cos that's where Miami's and Orlando's weakness is at. They will be tested.

My only concern for the Celts is the departure of Thibo. Will they be the same defensive team and be able to run that complex schemes that gets teams off base? Can Doc really coach? You look at Lakers and you ask if Kobe's due for a major injury and if Bynum's legs will hold up. Every team has questions going into the season and but that's the beauty of it. May the lucky team win!

This is the year of the players chasing rings. Shaq is not the player he used to be but can be effective in spurts. I wouldn't mind the big guy winning one more ring but just not against the Lakers.

that's quite classy of you...do you feel a retired laker jersey is too much to ask?

Before he went to Boston, I think he would have had his jersey up with all the greats. Now I seriously doubt it.

Shaq is cool, he is funny and you will always get a good laugh. ppl act like the guy went to Boston to be a savior that is not his reasoning behind going there. He will give them some pretty good minutes and a big body inside. He is just a rental until KP can comeback.

To add, no one is talking about the signing of JO...I would pick old arse Shaq over JO anyday of he week to use as a rental.

I hope not, but I can see his up in the rafters before Fisher's.

It would be wierd having all the laker greats up in the hallowed rafters, and 34 isn't with them....but i suppose loyalty (whatever it is in the NBA) is open to intepretation....
I'd say go ahead and place fisher's up...he contributed for a long period of time.

That was not a good PR move for Shaq moving to Boston but I still think Dr. Buss has a soft spot for him. In his HOF speech he said kind words for Shaq but acknowledge he said bad things about the owner and franchise.
I just feel sad for Shaq for throwing his legacy in these last few years moving from team to team in a desperate attempt to try to even Kobe in rings. I doubt he has put that behind him.

Hello YoHi64! Good to see you back on the NBA threads. Good luck to your team. Hope we meet in the finals again. That would be sweet!

Fisher's jersey is not going up. I just can't see it happening because that is "hallowed ground". Only the greatest of the Laker greats have their jerseys up.

u know, 1 has 2 ask this question: If LeChoke & Shaq really wanna win then y didn't they try 2 team up with Kobe? If they were gonna team up with sum1 & claim all they want is 2 win, then y wouldn't u team up with the 1 guy who is a proven winner & knows how 2 get the job done during reg season games as well as steppin his game up in the post season. I believe as much as they want us fans 2 believe they wanna win & that's it, they aren't up 4 the challenge. Kobe don't cut corners & play round & I think they all know that & really don't wanna commit like that, thus Kobe keeps winning & they keep loosing!
