Crosby may kill Pens penalties

It seems that Sidney Crosby is constantly adding new roles and titles. He was the NHL's scoring champion and MVP last season and was named the Penguins' team captain in the offseason. Now he could add the final facet to his on-ice role. Already the Penguins' top-line center, quarterback of the power play and top-three shootout participant, Crosby will be given a chance earn a spot killing penalties. Coach Michel Therrien said yesterday he is looking to add at least one more forward pairing to the two that carried much of the load last year, Maxime Talbot- Colby Armstrong, and Jordan Staal-Ryan Malone.

Next logical step, lets try this!

September 20, 2007  09:57 AM ET

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Is this really news worth talking about? Crosby is going to be on the PK unit. GROUNDBREAKING

September 20, 2007  10:07 AM ET

WOW thats never been done before

September 20, 2007  10:53 AM ET

Aren't all great players expected to contribute any way they can? How is this news? (DC)

September 20, 2007  11:18 AM ET

And we care about this why ?.....

September 20, 2007  11:27 AM ET

Why does everyone seem to want to jump on Sid's case. He doesn't ask for this stuff to be printed. I think it is great he is adding to his arsenal of talent. Everybody needs to give it a rest and jump of his back!!

September 20, 2007  11:29 AM ET

Unless it is a close game I don't see the reasoning. The pens have enough weapons for the PK.

September 20, 2007  11:50 AM ET

Way too early in his career to make him an all around player ala Yzerman. He still has too many years of offense left.

September 20, 2007  11:59 AM ET

It's news because it's Sid, man. Jeez. He's, like, Eric Roberts in the Best of the Best. He's, like, the best! Allow me to predict another first round playoff exit. Crosby on the PP or not.

September 20, 2007  12:00 PM ET

PP = PK. yeesh.

September 20, 2007  12:13 PM ET

Also this just in....Hatcher is going to try and boost Philly's Defense by taking skating lessons!

September 20, 2007  12:28 PM ET

I feel honored to have lived during his presence.
I'm considering relocating to Pitts. to be closer to him.

September 20, 2007  12:57 PM ET

Jealous!!!!

Since all great players contribute anyway that they can, I'm sure that Wayne played a lot of PK time back in Edmonton, right!?!?!?

Besides, this wasn't top of the fold, breaking news on TSN or The Hockey News... it was the blurb in an article about the Pens training camp. The hockey writers have to have something to talk about!

September 20, 2007  01:32 PM ET

Jealous? Jealous of what? I don't get your reasoning here as no one is critizising Sid, PittBeatWVU. He is an awesome player! No arguments there.

FYI, Wayne always did whatever was asked of him and more......a whole lot more......as his Stanley Cup rings prove beyond any doubt! He would even go in net and play the goaltending position if he thought that would help the team win. Sid will also have to do what's asked of him to help the team win. Whatever it takes. (DC)

not as sure that this is a great idea as the rest of you seem to be. Yes, a star player needs to play in all situations, but there are reasons you may not want to do so in Sid's case, and it has nothing to do with any kind of lack of ability - I think this kid could do just about anything he wanted to on the ice.

My justification comes from Tampa Bay. 3 of the best players in the league play in every situation in TB, and yes, they make the playoffs, but by then those 3 have no legs left under them from playing 25 minutes every game. The Pens have 2 lines of players that aren't really expected to score, their job is to play D and shut down the other team. Otherwise, why are they collecting a paycheque? Plus, on top of it all, you are increasing the chances of Crosby getting hurt (by a shot off the ankle at the VERY least).

A more reasonable idea - and maybe this is the real plan here, I don't know - is to practice his penalty killing, and use him in the most important situations, like to kill a PK at the end of a one goal game or situations like that. You DO want your best skaters on the ice in those situations, but I think you are just setting this kid up for an injury or burnout if you play him on the PK steady. He just can't play enough minutes to be on the ice for the whole game, as ideal as the Penguins see that as being

September 20, 2007  04:10 PM ET

As a Pens fan, I think Sid playing the PK is a good third option for the PK. With Staal and Talbot already leading the PK, scoring 11 goals out of the team's 14 SHG, I think Crosby could be an added punch to the offensive side of the PK. Especially with his speed and creativity with the puck.

The only question is, who will they pair him with? Logic tells me it's either going to be Christensen, Roberts, or just maybe (probably not) Ruutu.

September 20, 2007  04:30 PM ET

Now running a simulation : Barring human conscience, if you see crosby go down to try and do a shot block, would you:
a) Pump fake and TRY to deke past him
b) Pass it like what common sense would dictate
c) LET IT RIP! - Welcome to the world of pain Mr. Crosby!

If you answered C then you get the point I am trying to bring out on the implications with Crosby on the PK. This taking into account the fact that you are void of all human conscience or wouldn't mind G. Laraque pulverizing you on your next shift.

September 20, 2007  10:57 PM ET

Work, work, work.

September 21, 2007  01:08 AM ET

Sidney is a robot!!! Next try him in the net!! I'm sure he will excel there as well!!!

September 22, 2007  06:09 PM ET

OK, here is why it is news. This is dedicated to all those who think they know what is going on... Sid has never played the PK. If he played it, he would have his hand in some of the SH points, which would give him more points overall. He won the scoring title last year with no PK points, unlike all the runner ups. So look for more offense this year and another scoring title. Oh, and by the way, Gretzky said that the only person that could break his big records is Sid, but only if he becomes a complete player and works the PK. That is why it is news.
