The Devils are hoping there is no damage to Colin White's right eye after the veteran defenseman was hit by a shot near the eyebrow during yesterday's practice session at Codey Arena in West Orange. While defending against two-on-ones, White took a shot just above his right eye and had to be helped off the ice while bleeding profusely.

The knee-jerk reaction to this incident? The NHL will order every player to wear a face shield. (DC)

Kind of like putting netting around the glass, eh?

Dont worry they have another goon who will take his place right away.

But if he had a face sheild, this would not be an issue! Before you start blasting me, I don't think it should be mandatory, but the players choice.

He sucks with one or two eyes.

September 20, 2007  03:25 PM ET

it IS the player's choice, Aris, at this point, they simply choose to not wear them. But really, the problem here isn't if he was wearing a cage or not. What is a guy doing in practice firing shots at eye level? I played hockey for years, and the unspoken (and often SPOKEN, if you broke the rule) was to keep the puck down in practice. None of the skaters want to catch the puck in the face, and the tenders don't want it in the head or throat, like what happened to Luongo (again) in Vancouver last week. I don't care if you are doing it to try to impress the coaches - you aren't impressing ANYBODY when you take out a care who is already pencilled in for a roster spot.

Oh, and BobD, you're right, he sucks no matter what kind of shape he's in

Jokes aside you ever wanna see guy go down like that

- Now with full reality - It wouldn't be too hard to replace white, i mean after all, he never needed much of his eyesight anyways as he always has his head down - sadly with or without the puck.

If you were the owner of the Devils, who have to still pay this guy after he is hurt, wouldn't you want them to wear a shield?

I wish they sill had to wear cages!!!! Make it a must that ALL PLAYERS WEAR SHIELDS!!!!!!!!!!
