Mr. Hockey feuds with neighbors

Hockey legend Gordie Howe says he's being checked by his neighbors -- 17,000 times a day -- and he's tired of it. Howe, who has been the subject of a residential association dispute for more than a year, this week won a temporary restraining order barring the neighbor from spying on his home with a surveillance camera. The lawsuit alleged the neighbors have had a camera trained on the Howes' home that takes one photograph every five seconds -- more than 17,000 videotaped photos a day -- and are using them for "publishing the irrelevant, harassing, private and personal information to neighbors, township officials and others." The neighbors said their interest stems from their belief the Howes have used the address for business purposes since 2006 in violation of homeowner association rules and township law.

OK, yeah, it's annoying when neighbours snoop on you. But the bigger question is: Is Gordie Howe coming out of retirement? He could still play for the Maple Leafs! (DC)

Not slow enough yet....

September 20, 2007  11:33 AM ET

Neighbor must not be a big fan of hockey.

September 20, 2007  12:06 PM ET

He should just drop the gloves in his driveway and fight every neighbor one and one until he is the last man standing.

****Women and Children are included****

September 20, 2007  12:11 PM ET

Leave the legend alone!! Damn people!

September 20, 2007  12:53 PM ET

what a pile of garbage that meighbour must be, having nothing better to do than spy on an 80 year old man. Wish I knew the address...the long time Wings fan would make sure they didn't NEED the restraining order!

September 20, 2007  12:55 PM ET

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the problem with home owners associations...It is his house, his property and no one should have the right to tell any man/woman or child what they can and can't do with/on/in or to the property that they pay taxes on. I agree with efizzle201...drop the gloves Mr. Hockey and commence to whooping A S S !!!

September 20, 2007  01:29 PM ET

But maybe he is illegally running a business from his house and gaining tax advantages the other neighbours cant use. Im sure they are affluent people too. I wouldnt want a guy parking 6 dump trucks in his driveway beside me either. Hence...we dont know the whole story...

September 20, 2007  01:59 PM ET

How much can an 80 yr old do? My dad is older and as he is my guide to understanding the activity level of an 80 yr old all I can say is LET THE MAN HAVE HIS FUN IN PEACE!

September 20, 2007  02:27 PM ET

People so damn nosey. Go play in the garden or somethin..

September 20, 2007  02:32 PM ET

no offence, Peter, but I don't think they would need the system that takes "17,000 videotaped photgraphs a day" if the work being done was so blatant - or really obvious at all, really. If it were something clearly happening, the neighbour could likely have gotten away with just coming out and taking the picture with a normal camera whenever he saw it happening. This is clearly a case of an **** neighbour getting in someone's kitchen they have no business being in.

September 20, 2007  02:42 PM ET

It isn't illegal to run a business from his house. The homeowners association contract apparently has a clause in that says you can't and that is my problem. My neighbor and everyone around me shouldn't be allowed to tell me what I can and can't do from inside my house. Technically anyone that sells anything on ebay for a profit is running a business out of their house. Especially with the quantity of items sold. I used to sell sports cards and memorabilia on line through ebay, would you want your neighbors telling you that you can't sell something on ebay? I used to sell a lot on ebay and I made a lot of money at it, I had to tell my accountant about my activities, that is running a business. Just because there isn't a sign in my yard or an attorney that has licensed my business name doesn't mean I'm not running a business. Yes, if my neighbor had 6 dumptrucks in the driveway I would want him to try and find somewhere else to put them but I would do it as an individual, not have a neighborhood of a bunch of nosey nellies back me with a stupid home owners contract. People have forgotten how to mind their own business and stupid lawsuits is the result of it. That and moronic home owners associations that charge you money to tell you what you can and can't do in the privacy of your own home.

September 20, 2007  03:51 PM ET

Unbelievable!! Some people are just so bored they'd do anything!
Drop the gloves! Show these unbelievers how hockey can hurt sometimes....

September 20, 2007  04:11 PM ET

*sigh*

September 20, 2007  04:41 PM ET

Maybe Bettman should work his way into this case like he always does with everything but this time do something useful such as : Giving pitsburg a call to see if he can borrow George Laraque for one day... You know the rest

September 20, 2007  06:29 PM ET

What a bunch of pricks! This is Homeland Security at it's finest. Thanks Mr. Bele-chump, now all these idiots think they have the right to spy. Gordie should give those chumps something to look at and mount a .50 cal. to the roof of his house, train it for movement, so when the neighbors walk outside the barrel follows them. Something like what the Black Hawk does, that would be sweet.

September 20, 2007  06:31 PM ET

Its too bad a legend like Gordie didn't make enough during his career that he would have to put up with any neighbor!

September 20, 2007  10:45 PM ET

Guess that neighbour never had a look at Gordie's mitts or a peek at his elbows. That camera would go, but fast.
Hey, Peter Goezinya...great line about the Leafs.
