Trojans senior RB earns start

Seniority apparently has its privileges. A week after sophomore starter C.J. Gable ran for 40 yards on his first carry against Nebraska and sophomore Stafon Johnson rushed for a career-best 144 yards, senior Chauncey Washington will start at tailback against Washington State, Coach Pete Carroll said Thursday. Washington, the Trojans' leading rusher last season, had been on track to start the opener against Idaho before he suffered a shoulder sprain in the Trojans' final training camp scrimmage. Washington gained 43 yards in 12 carries and scored two short touchdowns against Nebraska.

Holy....I hope Joe McKnight isn't reading this.....tantrum after the news @ 6:00.

Gee, Stafon, thanks for helping out in a pinch

September 21, 2007  11:52 AM ET

He will start but that's about it Stafon Johnson will be coming in and getting alot of carries like he did against Nebraska. Washington is just not durable and Pete is trying to keep him healthy. So that he can have Senior leadership on the field

The U.S.C. running back situation couldn't be more messed up. C.J. Gable and Stafon Johnson could be starters elsewhere, and instead they are fighting for carries.

Why do these elite guys all pick the same school anyway? The ring is not the thing, it's getting to the League...dammnit!

That is why they go to USC, what other school do you know sends a 3rd string QB into the NFL. They know that as freshman they have a chance to compete at the highest level and win.

This sounds much like a commune...is Pete sympathetic to our cause?

September 21, 2007  04:56 PM ET

Yeah, I would rather split carries or playing time with 5 other talented guys and get drafted in the 6th or 7th round because of my ability.

But wait if I went to a school where I could star I could be a first rounder.

That makes perfect sense. Whatever.

Chauncey, Chauncey, he's our man! If he can't do it, sports agents will buy the whole team a van!

Other teams send guys to the NFL folks not just tigerbait -
I I mean usc.
I think the senior should start - if he's good enough.
Especially with a position where a guy could benefit from being spelled.
He can still showcase his talents without being rode hard.
And yes he still can go in the first round.
who is that Colts RB ?
didn't he split time with Alley Broussard, and Justin Vincent?

What has the kid worked hard for,
and maybe sat second or third string for?

If he has been loyal to the program that loyalty should be rewarded.

And when he is ready to move on he will still have plenty of body left to play with.

What 3rd string QB did usc send to the NFL?

September 21, 2007  09:47 PM ET

Cassell was a 2nd string. He was a seventh rounder on pure potential.

When I watched the game, I saw them use a bunch of different backs. If I were Johnson, I would transfer. No way I would split carries if I were that good.

No Cassel was thrid string. And Johnson didnt play last year because he didnt display the work ethic that they coaches wanted to see. he was behind Palmer and Lienhart, when palmer left he was put behind Sanchez.
