08:47 AM ET 09.03 | Signing with Detroit would result in an obvious changing of the guard. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he met with [Maltby] on Wednesday, a continuation of the talks they've had since early June. ... "Everything I told Malts, his agent knows," Holland said. "He's been here for a thousand games. I thought it was important that Kirk and I talk face to face." Holland believes Maltby can still be an asset, but the reality is the team will break training camp with more forwards than they have roster spots.

How does re-signing someone who has played 1000 games for you a changing of the guard?

Maltby looking at two-way deal?

If I were Maltby I'd hold out for a three-way deal.

Isn't that what Avery did? Oh, no, that was a threesome.

Precisely. Holland wants to make it look like he is doing the right thing, but it's pretty obvious Maltby will be getting the shaft.

Maltby appears to have a dose of the reality that Oldtom had in his last post on the previous page of threads.

He realizes this is the best way for him to make more money that he can doing most anything else. So what if he has to do time in the AHL or wherever, he will get time in the NHL at some point and it all for sure beats flipping burgers.

Maltby's prolific scoring career was once immortalized by the immortal (coff, coff) Oiler coach himself, Ron Lowe. Maltby told the press ' I'm not shaving until I score' and Ronnie said ' I don't think I'll recognize him'.

Detroit hung on to Chelios too long and lost Kyle Quincey because of it. It was "classy" to keep him but it hurt the team in the long run. Holland is not going to do that again. Next year Draper will go through the same process when his contract is up.

Fully agree on all points. And Hank is correct about OT's post from yesterday. It's definitely worth the short surf back. Great read. Great post. Boo-yaa.

Hey Harry I'd be even more worried about your beloved Flames. The Sutter clan might be stretched a bit thin as it appears they're running the Calgary 911 call centre. ;-)

It looks like Duhryl already used that time machine and all he brought back was a haircut.

Uncharacteristically lucid for me that early in the morning.
