Bonds facing tough market

09:01 AM ET 09.22 | The National League is obviously out of bounds for Barry Bonds, for no team but the gate-crazed Giants would be shameless enough to play him in left field. As for American League contenders in search of a designated hitter, the Yankees, Red Sox and Indians are out. Vladimir Guerrero is easing toward that full-time role in Anaheim. The Tigers passed on Bonds when he cleared waivers this month, and they plan to stick with Gary Sheffield. The Twins don't have the payroll or the inclination. The soon-to-be-resurrected A's would not only be making the mistake of their lives, they'd have to rebuild their clubhouse to accommodate the wide-ranging gloom surrounding Bonds' locker. Seattle might be an outside chance.

He will end up somewhere most likely. He is still a solid 30 HR guy playing left field. Who knows what he could do if he was DHing and able to rest his legs more?

September 22, 2007  09:41 AM ET

..that *barely* played left field, missed 1 in 5 starts and is box office poison outside of the Bay Area.

September 22, 2007  10:18 AM ET

Did he run?
Did he run to second,
As he should that day?
Or did Mr. Merkle semi-circle away?

September 22, 2007  11:56 AM ET

I always thought baseball was about winning the World Series. Who cares what one player does or doesn't do. I wouldn't want him on my team if I was the manager because of all the negative media and his negative attitude.

September 22, 2007  01:28 PM ET

He's obnoxious. I won't miss him. Maybe now the Giants can build a team and start contending. He had his time, it's past. Let everyone move on.

September 22, 2007  01:36 PM ET

He should not even be facing a market! He should retire!

September 22, 2007  01:42 PM ET

Retire, Barry.

September 22, 2007  01:45 PM ET

Snooze, Barry will end up in New York and the Yankees will dump Giambi. In essence, one steroid freak for a bigger one. Good bye Barry

September 22, 2007  01:56 PM ET

I really wonder if there is any REAL market for Bonds anywhere in MLB.

Will GM's on each team independently come to the conclusion that Barry is just not worth the baggage?

Will we see Collusion 2? Will Bud use his influence to see to it that Bonds isn't signed by any team? Before you call me a conspiracy nut, remember, Bud was an owner during Collusion 1.

Personally I think any team that signs him will risk the long time ire of their fans for a short term plug at the gate.

September 22, 2007  02:16 PM ET

In a perfect little parallel universe, Bonds would be the dancing monkey holding out a tin cup for a blind Gypsy organ-grinder.

September 22, 2007  03:26 PM ET

Maybe Bonds can become a network commentator? HAH HAH heh Oh, I slay me... "So, Barry, what do you think of this Royals-Blue Jays matchup?" "**** them and **** you. Don't ask me stupid questions."

September 22, 2007  04:04 PM ET

one word.....LOSER!!!!

September 22, 2007  04:04 PM ET

LMAO @ madhatter!!!!....NICE, madhatter!

September 22, 2007  07:02 PM ET

If Bonds were willing to chop his salary in half and move to the AL, I can imagine a number of contenders being very interested ins signing him. The man still puts up impressive numbers at 43; his bat speed and power hasn't been discernibly affected by age and the lack of performance -enhancing substances.

September 22, 2007  11:03 PM ET

HATERS!!!! The GREATEST player ever!! He PUT SF ON THE MAP they wouldn't even be around if it wasnt' for him!! YES, they were on the verge of moving before him signed! AND FOR 43 YEARS OLD, HE STILL LEAD THE LEAGUE IN WALKS!!!! yeah, that means for all you brain dead folks out there, TEAMS ARE STILL SCARED OF HIM !!! Since when does "a good attitude" matter in the MLB????? IT'S ABOUT WINNING!!!! SF screwed themselves and could have done something better then signing Zito $ 125 mil. Yeah, so, good luck with that!!! You all can put up all the asterisk you want, but you CANNOT deny that even before all the steroids talk he already have 7 yeah, 7 NL MVPs under his belt. Give the man his dues....b/c you know what it comes down to: HE HAS----NEVER---- TESTED POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS~~!!!!! thank you ......

September 22, 2007  11:55 PM ET

I'll take this one-

The Giants were on the verge of moving indeed. That was because Bob Lurie wanted to sell the team. He was tired of SF politics after being defeated at the polls 8 times. Bonds had nothing to do with them staying. Peter MaGowan stepped up, roped up a bunch of rich guys, and bought the team.

Smart political action on the Giants new ownership group got Pac Bell Park built. Largely because they weren't seeking public funding (at least up front, that's a different story). Again, Bonds didn't build the place. Bonds did fill the place though.

As for the Zito signing, yeah, the truly over paid for him. In 3 years though, it'll might be a bargain. Could they have done better with that money? Not sure, every bat they went after in free agency the last two years signed elsewhere for more money.

Yeah the guy had MVP's before steroids. Pete Rose is the hit king. Neither should be in the hall for undermining the integrity of the game. Neither were alone in their transgressions, but both were exposed.

Supporting Bonds by saying he never tested positive for something they weren't even testing for is one of the most MENTALLY--- RETARDED---- ARGUMENTS--- EVER. Oh and your hero did test positive for amphetamines AFTER they were banned. So please don't bust out the moral integrity defense.

Once a cheat, always a cheat. Oh and a coward for blaming a teammate. And some friend letting his buddy and doping coach rot in jail. Why is Greg Anderson in jail? Because he can seal the prosecutions case by decoding the drug regimen.

September 23, 2007  02:22 AM ET

That was awesome. Zwitek, you my friend are a true baseball fan.

September 23, 2007  07:03 AM ET

I could see Bonds playing for the Twins. They always need a power hitter and he would fit in nicely with Mauer and Morneau. I just don't think the Twins would pay what Bonds wants. If Bonds was smart though he might think about it if he wants once more chance at a ring. Twins have great pitching and okay hitting. It won't hurt the Twins attendance either!

September 23, 2007  08:34 AM ET

Somewhere in the AL there's a hat big enough for his pumpkin head. But why would anyone want to take on Barrys' baggage? He's too old to really be a difference-maker anymore. Barry is trying to accomplish some personal goals (3000 hits) but at what cost? As usual,it's for his benefit and not the teams. He will still hit one out now and then, but for 10 Mill that's no bargain. And I can't see him being a big factor in attendance outside San Francisco. He should go home with his charming personality and write a book. "if I Did Them" would work real well.

kick his butt,Zwitek. Great rant... made apple sauce outta his logic. I am sensing that this thread needs a dose of the Truth, and a Good Looking Man. to set it further straight. Greggie boy aint gonna sing...he knows he is dead meat, as is his family,if he does. They will eat his children...
