'Upheaval' in Pads rotation at crucial time

08:12 AM ET 09.07 | The timing could have been better. Through Sept. 1, the Padres' starting rotation exemplified stability. Jon Garland, Mat Latos, Clayton Richard, Kevin Correia and Wade LeBlanc combined to make all but two of the club's 132 starts. Now, at the most crucial point of the season with the team struggling, the rotation is in a state of flux. First, a struggling LeBlanc was removed from the rotation Friday in favor of the club's most advanced prospect, Cory Luebke. On Monday, Latos was pushed back one day because of a stomach virus. And now Correia will be skipped for at least one start. ... For the four-game showdown beginning Thursday against San Francisco, Black indicated that Garland will pitch the first game, followed by Richard. Saturday's starter is undecided with Latos expected to go Sunday.

For the Pads this is still a better place than they expected to be at the very begining.

even if the padres win the pennant, they will hit the exit early on the very first round, weak rotation, passive & hitless line up, teams with this type of mentality need to take a early vacation!

5 days ago they had the best record in the NL. Now they have no pitching and no hitting. How did they do it? They'll be back.

If you look around a lot of teams have pitchers breaking down. Skipped starts, throwing in a spot starter, opting for more pampered rested arms coming up with the expanded roster, etc. You have to patch it together somehow. You cannot count on a single rotation for the entire year. The Padres were lucky to this point to get so much production out of so few pitchers.
