Jets surprised Richardson with cut

08:00 AM ET 09.08 | Joking that he went to Revis Island, Tony Richardson made his return. Richardson said he was "caught off guard" Sunday when the Jets cut him. "It's the nature of the NFL, which stands for 'Not For Long'," Richardson said. His absence was even shorter. Tuesday, he returned to pads and practice, making his way back in an unceremonious manner compared to that of Darrelle Revis, whose presence attracted an overflow of cameras and microphones. "I thought that [Richardson's return] was probably the story of the day," Rex Ryan said. Richardson, 38, has played 16 seasons in the league, but would not reveal specifics of a discussion he had with Ryan and GM Mike Tannenbaum, but he also explained that he did not speak with any teams in the interim.

For Richardson, NFL means more like "Never F*ckin' Leave". An amazing exception to the rule, especially for a running back.

Yeah man, he played with the Cowboys in 1994. I'm surprised they cut him. Although if you watch hard knocks, in the 1st episode, there was some serious competition @ the FB spot between TR, a kid named John Conner, and some other journeyman. Even though he's back, I never thought they'd cut him. Sanchez admitted he used him as a crutch last year and Rex even said he was the most positive, vocal leader on the team (or something to that effect). Glad he's back.

Maybe the best FB of all time....dude has a legit resume. Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson (his best seasons), Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor, Thomas Jones. Dude has paved the way for a TON of 1,000 yard rushers. Plus, he's a real leader.
Glad he's back.

Yep, I think that says a lot about their offensive philosophy for the coming season.

Back then it didn't matter who the backup RB was for the Cowboys. I don't really recall this guy. Seems they always had a different guy ever year backing up Emmitt.

I love this guy but not for long and a 16 year career do not compute to me. He is not on the team for his skills as much as his leadership = extended career.
Everyone is cutting down salary for the anticipated loss of revenue next year (I say 12 game season) and ticket sales and revenue overall is down.

They also were saving money until the revis deal was done, so when that came in at the numbers it did they had room to hire him back.

Well whatever Whatever...my point is still the same. He was backing up guys that played a lot of downs, so it wasn't a career enhancer being behind Emmitt or Moose.

Class act but I think this was Rex being emotional, not practical. The Jets don't need leadership at this point. Actually I'm not sure what they do need. Hate to say it but I can't wait for Ravens-Jets on Monday night! The winner has to be a strong conference fave!

I disagree about leadership. I think you always need solid leaders, "teach by example" guys. One in every unit would be ideal, but the more the merrier. Someone like T-Rich can quietly push the kids to keep building up the work ethic. I can't wait for the Monday night game, either.

Agreed. The Jets NEED leadership on this team. In the past offseason they lost Alan Faneca & Thomas Jones, their 2 offensive vocal leaders. Losing Richardson would of put the offense in disarray especially after a lackluster preseason.

Well ... they have a 2nd year QB who threw a TON of INTs last year. Wouldnt you run the crap outta the ball?
