Meyer blames Pouncey, too

08:20 AM ET 09.08 | Mike Pouncey knows he's getting killed on Facebook for his dodgy snapping effort Saturday, but Urban Meyer isn't laying all the blame at his feet. Meyer placed some of the blame for the poor shotgun exchanges on a lack of focus by quarterback John Brantley. During UF's closer-than-expected victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Pouncey and Brantley bungled 14 shotgun snaps. The errors ruined the timing and rhythm of Florida's offense and led to an embarrassing start of the season. Florida had less than 30 yards of total offense entering the fourth quarter. "The things we've identified are the actual snap, gripping the football and Johnny's focus," Meyer said.

At some point in that game, the backup center should've gone in for at least a series or two. Either way, that offense reeked on so many levels. Even if they could snap the ball successfully they weren't going far on that godawful playcalling. Tebow is gone. Quit calling Tebow plays. Let Brantley drop back and throw the ball. When he did, they moved the chains.

Factor in all the dumb penalties on defense and the Gators have a lot of improving to do if they want to contend in the SEC.

Yep, that was one ugly game last Saturday... Florida has to recapture a new identity after Tebow's tenure...

If Brantley would just learn how to execute that stupid jump pass or trap play all would be forgiven.

September 8, 2010  08:57 AM ET

I could see one or two bad snaps -- after all, Pouncey was not the starting center last year, his brother was -- but FOURTEEN? Seriously? And it's not like they were going up against The Steel Curtain defense of the '70's Steelers.

I do feel that if they are going to let Brantley be a pocket passer, then he probably needs to be under center. That would have eliminated most, if not all, of the bad snaps on Saturday. I still see no reason to panic in Gainesville, as long as they get the issue solved before they go to Alabama.

If timing is the issue this is actually the worst thing you could do. Timing only gets better with repetition.

It was a poor job by the coaches (Meyer and Adazzio). They had all spring/summer to get Pouncey & Brantley on the same page. Then when it was a problem during the game, they needed to move Pouncy to guard and get Robey in there at Center. And at RG, John Halapio had a horrendous game. Basically it was a make shift line, but our 2nd stringers should still be better than what Miami(OH) can throw at them.

September 8, 2010  09:20 AM ET

Hey, where the hell are the Alabama articles? Dammit.

Seriously, though, the Miami of Ohio players must not have received the memo that they were supposed to be the chumps. They were hitting hard on almost every play. They truly thought thyey could win that game from the way they were playing. (They really did not have a chance, but they thought they did).

September 8, 2010  09:28 AM ET

Here's a novel idea, Urban:

PUT THE QB DIRECTLY BEHIND THE CENTER!!! If that doesn't solve that problem, then you truly have a mess on your hands.

People are making too big a deal out of this. Urbans ran the spread since 2001 at Bowling Green. I'm sure he's had this problem before and knows how to fix it

Kind of a misleading headline?

but Urban Meyer isn't laying all the blame at his feet. [Meyer] placed some of the blame for the poor shotgun exchanges on a lack of focus by quarterback John Brantley.

I would think the lack of focus of your QB would be a better story....IMHO
