Video game takes sides in Ovie vs. Sid debate

08:36 AM ET 09.08 | A bar stool battle renews. Hockey video games will always have some wonky player ratings. For one thing, it's human nature. These things are also almost exclusively subjective. ... Still, for the most part, game companies get it right. If nothing else, player ratings are an interesting barometer of how a player is perceived. Since NHL '11 arrived in video game stores at midnight, I thought it might be a good time to take a look at some of the ratings. (Note: these ratings are based on the first roster update found online). Washington Capitals fans rejoice: Alex Ovechkin is a 94 while Sidney Crosby is a 93.

Somehow I don't think Sid or Pens fans are on suicide watch just yet. Who cares about NHL '11?

Not me.

I'm not either. I think if you just look at the statistics, Ovie is slightly better than Sid, but if I were picking a team, I'd take Sid before I'd take Ovie any day.

Sidney Crosby is a more pure goal scorer but Ovechkin is a much better all around player than Crosby is or probably ever will be.

Or any other video game.

I strongly suspect most of the TD crowd does. It's how they live....

I think I'd take Ovie first, though the difference ability wise is so minute as to be unnoticable. i think I'd take Ovechkin because he hits more...

If you're trying to start a venue war, I'm in. Although then we'd have to listen to all that TD whiny blathering.

Here we f'in go! Yippee.

September 8, 2010  10:17 AM ET

Hey everyone can take Ovie while playing their video games. I'll take Crosby on my team playing for the Cup. I am sure Crosby is all distressed over this one. I am sure it's gonna f'up his game this season. LOL!

As a Caps fan who loves watching Ovie (and I enjoy watching Sid too except when the **** beats us). I don't really claim either one is "better". They do different things and there is no doubt in my mind they are two of the greatest players it's ever been my pleasure to watch. Ovie plays far more physically (but Sid is no wuss for sure) and I realize sometimes #8 gets a wee bit out of control. I don't think he's a "dirty" player as many do however. Just very physical. He at times acts a bit too much like a kid and I must admit Sid is a lot more mature and intelligent in terms of running his team as Captain.

So...........bottom line. I can't wait for another year and the inevitable ".......is better" arguments to start again. I'm just hoping the Caps don't break my heart again wirth an early exit.

If you reversed the names, and thus moved your argument 180 degrees from where you took it, I'd agree with you.

I think Sid will sleep soundly despite these rankings. The Stanley Cup ring on his nightstand is comforting.

September 8, 2010  10:55 AM ET

Who gives a crap. Why don't you people debate the team and not the individual. Crosby's got the Cup and the Gold. End of debate. I'm a Red Wings fan and we have more cups than both of you.

I think the ring and the medal probably slowed Sid down a bit, giving Ovechkin the edge.

Let's just get the season started already

Well said, friend. Very mature post, and I enjoyed reading it.

And as a Pens' fan, I hope the Caps do...

Well the debate is over, EA Sports has spoken! It was nice to see everyone here debating the topic, but we will see it no more as the true expert has spoken.

all around? Ovechkin has never back checked once in his career. Ovechkin is the pure goal scorer. His shot is insane. Sid didn't start shooting until this past year when Bylsma told him to shoot more. He has always looked to pass first. Sid's the play maker......Ovechkin has amazing skill, but all around? Not a chance.
