Weis: Clausen not the problem

The education of Jimmy Clausen continued in Notre Dame's 31-14 loss to Michigan State on Saturday. The freshman completed 7 of 13 passes for 53 yards and was sacked three times, despite coach Charlie Weis devising a game plan that had him rolling out frequently to elude a Spartans defense that led the nation in sacks. ''I didn't think he was bad,'' Weis said. ''I didn't think he was good.'' Weis said he sent junior Evan Sharpley into the game early in the fourth quarter because he wanted to experiment with a no-huddle offense that Clausen didn't have a chance to master while he was recovering from arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip from his elbow during the preseason. ''He's far from being the problem here,'' Weis said of Clausen, who is not made available to media after games.

Clausen is not the solution either.

How happy is Lloyd Carr right now?

Weis, you are an incopetent boo b.

Please stay at ND.

September 23, 2007  11:08 AM ET

Can you imagine the told-you-so's coming from Clausen's older brothers right now?

September 23, 2007  11:53 AM ET

Lloyd Carr must be extremely happy beating a Penn St team that is at the top of the "illustruious" BIG TEN. Happiness is definately being a top 5 team at seasons onset then falling to a IAA powerhouse; not to mention beating a highly overrated PSU squad with a QB that continually shoots his team in the foot. Keep laughing now bc in the next few years ND is going to dominate. Had ND's current dearth of scholarship players (9 in total due to the "4-handicap" former IRISH coach Ty Willingham) been placed on the IRISH as a recruiting punishment it would be the second biggest punishment in NCAA history (the first being the entire banishment of the SMU football team). The IRISH, Weis and Clausen will be just fine in the years to come.

September 23, 2007  12:05 PM ET

Typical ND fan thinking about the future, holding on to the past, and forgetting about the present.

September 23, 2007  12:06 PM ET

Its amazing that there are Weis supporters out there with an unprecedented 0-4 start when their presdecessor wasn't ever this bad and all the fans were asking for his head. As a matter of fact, ND hasn't ever started 0-4 in history (119 years) and people are saying Charlie will be ok. They were giving the previous coach the benfit of the doubt. There is an obvious level of hyprocrisy here which cannot be disputed.

September 23, 2007  12:16 PM ET

Is his arm really healthy? He has no velocity and his ball wobbles. His footwork needs to improve. His demeanor indicates that he may be suffering from high school hero syndrome, nothing is his fault!
Having said all of that, he is not the problem, but his performance is centainly not helping.

September 23, 2007  12:16 PM ET

ND is horrible this year, but its due to a lack of players at key positions and extreme youth and inexperience. Weis knew this year would be a problem from the onset (there are 7 remaining players of 22 from 2004 class). That being said and not to sound hippocritical, Ty (though a horrible recruiter and clearly unable to work as hard as many other coaches) deserved more than three years to turn things around. And, if Charlie doesn't turn things around in the next few years he should go too. In fact, he said it when he was hired. But if we are going to bash them, look at the facts before doing so. This year was destined to be a disaster...if the subsequent years stink like this one...I'm on the bus to get Charlie out of town, too.

September 23, 2007  12:19 PM ET

Well, we can be grateful that the Navy/Airforce/St Mary's of the Bline portion of ND schedule is about to begin.

funny thing is, they'll still get a bowl. god bless em.

Let's treasure these times, when most ND fans have the common sense to ****.

Maybe Weis should run "Rudy" in loop in locker room. Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!

rotflmfao.

September 23, 2007  12:26 PM ET

If Ty was such a horrible recruiter, how was Weis winning with them. Ty recruited Brady Quinn. Not Weis. I do agree with you that Ty should have been given more time because he didn't even get a chance to finish coaching his recruits as you are saying we should do with Weis. The same excuse we are using now in that Weis needs more time to develop his recruits should have been applied to previous coaches. Ty just as Charlie did won with someone else's recruits. You said to state the facts. Well, as I remember, he started 9-0 his first year. I don't know what is lazy about that and two seasons later he was out of a job. Where were all the people thing screaming to give him the time he needed to develop his recruits as ever Weis supporter says today. Like I said, obvious hypocrisy!

September 23, 2007  12:29 PM ET

Charlie,
I kind of hate to say it, but you're the problem.

September 23, 2007  12:30 PM ET

Notice Weis didn't want to get too hard on J Clausen maybe he's hoping Clausen doesn't pull a Mitch Mustain & Charlie would lose his prize recruit. It would be very interesting to see if Charlie Weis would even make himself available in NY. I don't see even Charlie Weis being able to turn the Giants around they have to many "moody" veterans... Shockey, Strahan, Pierce.

September 23, 2007  12:35 PM ET

ND has a bigger problem that their blind faithful don't want to think about: They are irrelevant in the CFB world now. They have their own network contract - temporarily, but will lose it in a few years. And there is pressure from within the Big East to get rid of ND in all other sports (except hockey, where there is no Big East) and find someone who will put a football team into conference play. If ND doesn't want to be sent off the major hoops map, they had better do something. Like suck it up, share their soon-to-be-former TV contract, and join the Big East while they still can. Or else become a mid-major like Army that struggles for players.

September 23, 2007  12:40 PM ET

Ty won 9 games by the skin of his teeth and with defense and special teams. Anyone who followed those games knows we could have as easily won as lost. Regardless, willingham did not bring in top level recruits. It is hypocrisy that Weis get more than 3 years...but a precadent was set in college football (see Ron Zook at Florida). Maybe, by signing Weis to a long term deal they tgried to break some of that. Regardless, you need talent and leadership to compete at the highest level. Aside from Weis this team has neither.

As for Willingham, he played golf more than he coached. Check out the Washington fans saying the same thing. His 9-0 start was a fluke. By the Way, the only reason he even recruited Quinn is because Quinn's teammate in high school told him to check him out (he already had offers from OSU and MICH but was a big ND fan). His one good class tranlated into what 2005 and 2006 was for ND...decent seasons but still not top quality due to lack of depth. Contiue to love to hate ND all you want but I believe with the right players in place Charlie will lead us in the right direction.

September 23, 2007  12:49 PM ET

Do you guys forget that this would have been Willinghams 5th year senior class? ND will be dealing with the bare cupboard for a year or two more. But with what he had, in his first 2 years he did well with. Also don't forget that Weis first year is a wash out due to him not being able to recruit until after the Superbowl. So ultimately we are in year 2 of a rebuilding project.

As for losing their contract? I doubt it. NBC is hurting for sports, and ND, like it or not, is the most popular team in the country. I do think however, that you will see ND join the Big10 sometime in the next few years, since really if ND doesnt get a BCS game, there is really not much left after that.

BTW, I am surprised the "fat" jokes haven't come out yet, they usually do by this time.

September 23, 2007  12:53 PM ET

Dear Irish bashers,
I'm a diehard Irish fan and I know much more about the ND football team than you do. I'm not saying that arrogantly- you know much more about your team than I do. That's just how it works. If you want to know a bit about the ND program, read on. If you'd rather just bash the Irish without knowing what's going on, keep it up, there's no point in reading on.

ND's future is bright, and that is why most Irish fans are not in a state of extreme panic. When Bob Davie started 0-3 a few years ago, we were all pissed, because the future of the program was in doubt. Not so today. Our freshman and sophomore classes are very good. Our current recruiting class is great (ranked #1 in the country right now). Starting next year, we'll have more talent in the frosh, soph, and junior classes than almost any team in the country (only the usual suspects like USC, TX, Florida will have more).

Our struggles right now are a direct result of Willingham's horrific last recruiting classes. One more year of Willingham recruiting and my team would probably have been done for good. This is a major reason why Ty wasn't given more time. We just couldn't afford another year with him.

I guess my main point is this- I'm a diehard Irish fan and while this season is painful, I'm not panicking. This should tell you something. Like I'm telling all the Irish haters out there, get your licks in now- there's a rough stretch of years ahead for you when the Irish finally get back to form. So go ahead and start the bashing again (that's part of what makes college football great), but just realize that most Irish fans out there are just sitting back, patiently waiting for the influx of talent, and smiling. We know that we're on the way back...

(And anyone that wants an honest debate or wants to argue with something I've said, feel free. I'll do my best to answer.)

HEY COACH....AREN'T U SUPPOSED TO BE AN OFFENSIVE GENIUS and didn't U supposedly make Tom Brady and Brady Quinn studs? UH....When the hell are you going to do that for me???????????

Sincerely

Jimmy Clausen

September 23, 2007  01:02 PM ET

GoIrish...U keep living that it's all Ty's fault fantasy!!! Didn't Meyer win w/ Zook's players and then get his freshman on the field and is now winning w/ them? If Weis is such a brilliant coach then why aren't all his amazing recruits from his 2 supposedly world beating classes playing and contributing? With your vast knowledge of the ND..name me 1 Weis recruit who is playing lights out right now? If U say Jimmy Clausen is doing great or make excuses for him then you're a homer. Look @ Fla or South Carolina to see what a real college coach can do w/ anyone's talent. U gotta let Weis go back to the NFL and just start over

September 23, 2007  01:03 PM ET

Agree 100% GoIrish! (did you see the two stud freshman outside linebackers! Look out!). Let the bandwagoners and the Notrehaters keep talking. The Irish will rise from the ashes and be on top of the football world again. It must be difficult for the haters to realize that even at 0-4, 0-7 or what ever the record will finish at that Notre Dame is still America's team! The recruits keep coming and the 5 star kids are lining up to join the IRISH. The previous coaches could not get kids like this (or lost them see Greg Olsen to Miami Fla) so the support for Weis is not hypocracy rather it is patience. I know a novel concept but true Notre Dame fans have it.

September 23, 2007  01:10 PM ET

Golrish, let's assume for sake of argument that ND has a losing season that as I calculate, they might win 5 games this year...Ok, if they have another losing season next year, should Charlie be fired? I am asking you because you know more than I know......

September 23, 2007  01:19 PM ET

GoIrish, I repsect your opinion. Have you ever considered that you don't know more about ND football than anyone else reading and posting? To get into the Willingham debate is fruitless. You have your opinion and that's fine. Other people have their opinions and that's fine as well.
Why do you call USC, Texas and Florida suspects? What is your point?
Put your pride to rest GoIrish, you may know a lot about ND but you certainly aren't the only person reading and reacting who does know and understand college football. Talk is cheap and you appear to be good at that.
