Merriman returns to practice, unlikely Monday

08:00 AM ET 09.09 | Though reportedly highly unlikely to play Monday night in Kansas City, Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since Aug. 17. "It felt pretty good," said Merriman. "I'm just doing a little more each day, trying to take little steps forward and no steps backward." Only three practices after ending his holdout to sign a $3.69 million tender and rejoin the team in mid-August, Merriman was sidelined again by the soreness and swelling in his Achilles. He's gradually been increasing the range of activity, but only Wednesday did he return to pads and the practice field.

San Diego confuses me, well sort of. In an age were teams are dumping as much fringe player payroll as possible to save money for the possible lockout, etc why does SD work so hard at overpaying for a LB who's skills the last two seasons has reduced?
2005-2007 = 146 tackles - sacks 39.5
2008-2009 = 38 tackles - 4 sacks - reward 3.69 mil
I know he has been injured but come on - he is always injured now and if you can not obtain a decent back up who can atleast give you the same numbers as his declining ones - no wonder you guys have not won the AFC.

Has anybody noticed that he hasn't done anything since Wade Phillips left and DeMarcus Ware took off when Wade Phillips arrived? I don't think much of Phillips as a head coach but he does a great job with defense.

Take note of Ware this year, especially since Anthony Spencer has finally come on. They can't always double up on Ware with Spencer there, who had more sacks the second half of last year than Ware did.
