Why Weis may leave Notre Dame

Charlie Weis sure feels pressure now -- particularly as Urban Meyer, who rejected the Notre Dame offer before Weis accepted it, excels as a state-of-the-art coach at Florida. Very quietly, as we see happen every year in the coaching racket, politics will move incrementally to airlift Weis from his South Bend nightmare and into the Meadowlands. The longer he stays, the more sheen he loses from his once-golden reputation. And with the Chicago Public League becoming a recruiting problem zone after the fiasco involving benched quarterback Demetrius Jones, who was used as an unwitting short-term pawn while designated hotshot Jimmy Clausen recovered from injuries, Weis is falling out of favor in too many places.

Weis has been astonishingly bad at all phases of coaching and recruiting. The fact that he has poisened the waters in Chicago (ND's recruiting backyard) with his handling of Jones is just beyond stupid.

On top of his incopentence as a coach and recruiter....he has the gall to be an **** to everyone as though he is beyond question or reproach. Perhaps he should get a job in the Bush administration....he would fit right in.

All things considered, like 90% of the rest of America......I am loving this season.

Go Navy!!!

How has he been bad at recruiting? He has brought in two top 10 classes with a number one class on its way.

September 23, 2007  11:03 AM ET

His team is 0-4. He used to coach some other guy's recruits and was competitive now finally he is coaching some of his own and is pretty sad. A few good recruits don't make a good team...

September 23, 2007  11:03 AM ET

Wow Bandit, incoMpetence as a coach? Have some more short-term memory loss; the man went to two straight BCS games. Incompetence as a recruiter? This being his third real class, it's looking like it'll be his third straight top 7 class, possibly finishing top 3. I guess I'm not too sure where the incompetence lies there.

September 23, 2007  11:05 AM ET

IrishR 0-4, dude come on. Enough already with the "Charlie is a great recruiter" BS. How can you still print that garbage? You're a ND fan, that's great. Root for your team, but PLEASE stop with the Weis-worship. Even YOU can't be that blind. As Notre Dame's coach, Charlie Weis has been an unmitigated failure, PERIOD. No "if's" about it, he is TERRIBLE!

September 23, 2007  11:05 AM ET

He is coaching a few of his own, but those aren't the key players or key problems. Two offensive linemen are his and one linebacker. Those are the main problems. I still have some confidence in him.

September 23, 2007  11:06 AM ET

Weis does not have the ability to be a college coach. He's heartless, arrogant, can't deal with recruits and their parents correctly, and now under more stress than ever before in his coaching career. He's perfect for a losing NFL franchise - he's got NY Giants written all over him. Nice job ND alumni and boosters by the way. Much of this is YOUR fault.

September 23, 2007  11:10 AM ET

Is EVERY Notre Dame fan drinkin' the Kool-Aid?!?! What does this fat arrogant dope have to do to PROVE to you DomeHeads that he SUCKS?! If he went 0-11there would still be morons saying he's GRRRRREAT. Get a clue, DomeHeads, get a freakin' clue.

September 23, 2007  11:22 AM ET

He lead one pretty good recruiting class (Ty's first year) to two BCS Bowls. With three better ones, he could do wonders.

September 23, 2007  11:27 AM ET

Notre Dame made two BCS bowls in Weis' first two seasons, but they also got absolutely slaughtered in both of those games. Under Weis, they have yet to beat a team of any merit. At what point should Domers' expectations be to beat somebody other than Army and Navy? Those are the only teams they have consistently beaten. Weis may or may not suck as a coach, but the team sure as hell isn't doing a lot under him.

September 23, 2007  11:28 AM ET

I can't believe that I'm still seeing people defend Charlie Weis like this? Actually yes I can believe it.. With the pub and accolades that Chuck came to ND with, all this has to be a big part of his master plan right??

No better yet, this is being done so the headaches that are in charge at ND can show their compassion and understanding to a head coach that loses worse than any other school in the nation.

Upset Chicago recruits.. haha Chicago doesn't even play football, right?? Right??

I'm just helping out the ND faithful, just in case they DO keep Chuck around for next year.

September 23, 2007  11:29 AM ET

Charlie Weis won with Willingham's players, period. He needs to go back to the NFL coordinating offense from the box.

September 23, 2007  11:40 AM ET

Notre Dame has lost their last six games by an average of 28 points. End of conversation. They stink and are getting worse. The record speaks for itself.

September 23, 2007  11:55 AM ET

Eyes wide open just because we wont recruit low life thugs like bowden you can hate ND asll you want but I'd rather have a degree from ND than wipe my butt with a FSU diploma. Now go watch fat Bobby go 8-4 and go to the emerald bowl again.

September 23, 2007  11:57 AM ET

Did they take away his video stash too?

September 23, 2007  12:02 PM ET

It's amazing how there are still many Charlie Weis supporters out there with the worst start in their collegiate history (119 years)....wow, their previous coach didn't dig a hole this big and they were asking for his head. There is a certain element of hypocrisy here.

September 23, 2007  12:09 PM ET

Although, ND is horrifically bad this year anyone who follows ND knew this was a possibilty. There is noone left over from the TW regime. Charlie has gotten all the right kids in place...he just needs more of them. Had ND's current dearth of scholarship players (9 in total due to the "4-handicap" former IRISH coach Ty Willingham) been placed on the IRISH as a recruiting punishment it would be the second biggest punishment in NCAA history (the first being the entire banishment of the SMU football team). The IRISH, Weis and Clausen will be just fine in the years to come. Weis isn;t going anywhere.

September 23, 2007  12:12 PM ET

The fact is: the BCS games Weis went to were accomplished by players recruited before Weis arrived. Moreover, the BCS appearances were gifts -- if they were any OTHER team, Illinois or Syracuse for instance, there is no way they would have been playing in the BCS.

September 23, 2007  12:15 PM ET

gmac, I certainly hope Fat Weis doesn't go anyway. I want when this is all said and done for ND to really understand by consistent reminders from the press and tv anaylst how they have recently made some horrible decisions in their recent coach searches....

September 23, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Ok Weis won with Willingham's recruits. In Ty Willie's only good season his first(10-3) he won with Bob Davie's recruits so what is your point?
