Angels to consider releasing Kazmir?

08:24 AM ET 09.09 | Scott Kazmir may have $12 million coming to him, but he's not guaranteed a spot in the rotation. "He's a guy we definitely want to see turn the corner and start to pitch the consistent baseball he's capable of pitching," manager Mike Scioscia said. "But just like anyone else, when that becomes an issue and you're not heading in the right direction, you're obviously going to look for different options." ... If the Angels release Kazmir before 2011 they would have to swallow $14.5 million, because the 26-year-old has a $13.5-million club option for 2012 that can be bought out for $2.5 million.

Yeah, this guy has certainly taken like 19 steps back from a few years ago. I remember when he was serious Ace potential. Doesn't look that way anymore, but you never know. He's still young and could turn things around. Has he lost velocity or anything, as well? Or is he just not as sharp with the offspeed stuff as he once was? Haven't seen him pitch for awhile...

I haven't watched him pitch in awhile either, but I'm shocked at how far he has fallen. But he is only 26 so there is plenty of time to work with him and get him back on track.

send him to Dave Duncan...

From what I've seen and heard is he's afraid to throw his slider. That was his big out pitch just a few years back, but he began having elbow issues which he attributed to throwing that pitch. Anyhow, looks like a great move by the Rays in getting rid of him.

Ahh, ok. You're right, I do remember that being his "out" pitch and I remember the beginnings of elbow troubles. Makes sense, but the guy just needs to get over it. At the time I certainly thought the Rays were making a mistake, but look at their rotation now - they clearly knew what they were doing.

another contract the Angels would have to eat...they had to pay Kevin Appier something like $12 after they booted him, they still owe Gary HGH Matthews a ton of money, and i think hes out of baseball..
Kazmir went from leading the league in K's a few years back to having the highest ERA of any MLB starter this year..from what ive seen, when a pitcher loses it, it doesnt come back...unless your Roger Clemens, who met some guy who gave him juice, but if your clean, and you lose it...youre done...

the Angels could definitely use a new pitching coach...Butcher needs to go, as does Mickey Hatcher.

Think the Rays knew what they were doing when they moved him to the Angels a couple of years ago?

Cliff Lee. He was so bad in 2007, the Indians sent him to the minors and he wasn't on their playoff roster. He won the Cy Young the following year.

Exceptions don't make the rule, though, and generally speaking, I'd agree with you.

You mean last year?

Yes, I think they knew.

That was my thought too. I'd love to see Anaheim release him and the Cardinals take a shot. Dunc might turn this guy back into an ace.

Brilliant move by the Rays. Good timing, lowered payroll and picked up prospects. Of course they had the arms to cover his loss at the time.

I couldn't stomach that dreadful logo.

They really need something better. Even that lame "TB" sucks.

Agreed.

The Matthews contract is up there with 1 of the all time worst deals in sports.

And luckily for the Angels, they don't have to worry about who's going to be in their starting 5 much longer, as their season will be over much sooner than later.
