07:59 AM ET 09.10 | Jeff Backus knows the Mike Martz offense, having played two seasons under it. Needless to say, they weren't the fondest years of Backus' career. Told Wednesday that some members of the Lions'new-look defensive line were looking forward to playing against Martz's offense in Sunday's opener against the Bears, Backus said: "They should be. Because if they're doing the same things they did when he was here," Backus said, "they're going to have time to get to the quarterback." ... With Martz as their offensive coordinator, the Lions gave up 117 sacks over two seasons, most in the NFL. This exhibition season, Martz's Bears allowed a league-leading 19 sacks.

The Lions should concentrate on interceptions - they should be abundant.

Don't sack Cutler, give him time to throw. Even he won't get picked while he's lying on his back.

Cutler can get picked off before the opening kickoff. He's that bad.

Not in this offense. The plays take too long to develop: he'll have to get picked in the locker room after the game instead.

I just don't see that line protecting Cutler long enough for the passing game to function like it's drawn up. They'll need to develop a running game to ease the pressure, and Martz has shown no tendency for that at all.

It was nice to see Jerry Angelo make a splash at the start of the free agency period, but he did virtually nothing to help shore up that O-line, which has clearly been a weak point for the past couple of seasons. Par for the course for Angelo. If Bears fans are lucky, Angelo will get his walking papers in time for the New Year.

The O-line wasn't doing Matt Forte any favors last season.

Reading these comments, you'd never guess that the Bears are actually a 6 1/2 point favorite going into the game. I think the Lions are going to win outright.
