Gomez invites more, not less, pressure

08:16 AM ET 09.13 | Scott Gomez isn't shy about facing expectation. Twice an NHL champion in New Jersey, Gomez knows how thin the is line between Lord Stanley and summer. Now, a week before the Canadiens open their 2010-11 training camp, having experienced a full, unforgiving year of Montreal hockey, he knows very well how high last season's remarkable run has placed the bar for the 82-plus games ahead. "That's what you must have," Gomez said ... "That's the bar you expect, especially in a city like this. To play in probably the greatest hockey city, you want the pressure to be high. What would be the point of playing here, where the fans are so passionate, just being content to make the playoffs? We feel we're going to be one of the strong contenders in the East."

Nice to hear. Now, how about 75 points this year to earn some of that monster salary?

It would be nice for you but dream on. In the lockout year he played for the Alaska Aces of the ECHL and didn't reach 75 points. Good luck with that.

Soemone should remind Scotty that their meal ticket has left town... with price in net, Habs will not even reach the post-season.

Sorry Habs fans but they overachieved last year. No playoffs.

Still laughing that one GM was stupid enough to sign him to a big contract and another one was even more stupid to trade for it.

Well Nard Dog, GM does stand for Gump Mimic, right? (And not Lorne John Worsley either.)

To say 8th is out of reach might be a stretch at this point. Leafs and Thrashers and others play there.....

Hey Scott - You're welcome for the 2 Cups in Jersey. Guess its been all down hill from there, huh?? You knew when you left NJ and signed with the Rangers that that's where all good players go to die. Playing for the Rangers is like playing in a never-ending training camp - it's just exercise.

"That's the bar you expect, especially in a city like this. To play in probably the greatest hockey city,..."
And, now he can expect a call from the commish. Cos, as we all know, the greatest hockey cities are in places where they have warm sunny climes 11 out of 12 months.

Ummm, he'd have to perform a miracle first! Like winning 3 in a row, and keeping the other teams goals against to 3 this year instead of five, and maybe....just maybe.........
THEY SHOULD HAVE NEVER LET HALAK GO!!! He had a great run. but I am starting to think the Habs want sympathy, as what other reason could there be???

You are absolutely correct. I forgot Google is my friend. Scotty scored 13 goals and had 73 asists while playing in the powerhouse ECHL. I just remembered the number 73 and thought it was his total. The 86 point total in the ECHL should translate to what...35 in the NHL? lol

You rang? Actually i feel bad for Scott. Sather threw a boatload of cash at him and the expectations were to become something he never was. He was never a 50 goal scorer and isnt captain material. Hes a great role player. I wonder if Gomez would trade some of those dollars for pressure relief?

Scott Gomez reminds me of Mickey Mouse...and now he's "trapped" in Montreal. The Leafs will throttle Montreal all year long this season.

no for sure, I just wanted to throw that out there. I'm from AK and went to a few of the Aces games and it was awesome to watch him play. The sheer skill difference from him to the others was incredible. And those 86 points came in only 61 games, so while it is the ECHL, it's still not terrible.

Well either that, or I hope he doesn't understand french! He's an o.k player, but has done nothing to earn that kinda money. I wish the teams would let some of these players mature, or get in their prime before throwing huge contracts out there! Good luck to King Henrik and the peasants! LOL
