08:18 AM ET 09.13 | Against the backdrop of looming cuts in the wake of signing Ilya Kovalchuk, are the Devils taking on a new identity? Signed for 15 years and $100 million, Kovalchuk is a signal of so many things. First, he's a sign that the Devils are trying to make hay in the final years of Martin Brodeur's tenure. Secondly, he's a clear symptom of New Jersey's coming accent on finesse offense, not just grind-and-jam scoring. Third, he's a response to the reality that in order to get out of the Eastern Conference, the Devils have to answer Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin.

Fifth, it's the Devils. Most boring hockey ever.

September 13, 2010  10:23 AM ET

Personally, I don't think that Kovie is good enough to be compared to Sid, Gino, or what's-his-name

"in order to get out of the Eastern Conference"

They can leave any time they want to.

Hopefully with Parise on one line and him on another that will throw fits for other teams.

Yep. Their hockey would have been much more interesting had they tanked it for 10 years in order to draft number one.

Oh, you're so creative...and wrong. NIce try Sparkym but try knowing just a little something before you open your pie hole.

Those Penguin teams in the early 2000's were legitimately bad, make that REALLY BAD, teams. They earned their terrible records. Would you accuse the Caps of the same thing to get Ovie?

Devil hockey, successful or not is BORING! The trap is BORING! Like it or not, you can't change the facts Junior.

Most teams employ a version of the trap, at varying degrees. The Devils play a whole lot different than they did between 95 and 05. Is it firewagon hockey (to quote Doc Emerick)? No it isn't. But it is not left-wing lock hockey either. Still, 10 seasons of icing **** and calling it the Penguins was not good hockey..any way you cut it ,it s^cked.

Wow! You really have absolutely no feaking clue what you are talking about. 10 years?? Try 4 when they were in 5th place in the division. Prior to that, they finished 3rd three times. That was preceeded by 1st or 2nd place finishes for 8 years including the Cup years.

Junior?? Refers to you infantile knowledge. Again, know what the hell you are talking about BEFORE you open your pie hole.

Love when people talk smalk then don't have the facts themselves. Is this 1995? When Sutter was the coach, there was no trap, that was 2 yrs ago. When Robinson was coach there was no trap, in fact they were near the top of the league in scoring. So 2 of the last 4 full time Devils coaches didn't employ the trap. You are right the trap is boring, just like bringing up facts from 10 yrs ago.

Whether they were formally playing the trap or not, they have played boring hockey for years. Semantics aside, their style of hockey is BORING.

In the Eastern Conference, not even the whole damn League, he is where the vaunted Devils' offense finished in goals scored:

09-10: Tied for 8th
08-09: 9th
07-08: 14th
06-07: 14th
05-06: 11th
03-04: 8th
02-03: 8th

When were they in the top of the League in scoring again???
Maybe you should learn your facts my friend.
