Marlins to test Dontrelle's value

The Marlins are expected to test Dontrelle Willis' trade value. And when General Manager Larry Beinfest announced Monday that pitching coach Rick Kranitz won't return, Beinfest pointedly said the pitching staff suffered from under performance as well as injuries.

Somehow I think he'll stay in the NL East.

Me thinks so too....

The TRUTH has inquired about obtaining Dontrelle for his barnstorming team

September 25, 2007  09:22 AM ET

Dontrelle needs to push himself away from the old buffet.

September 25, 2007  09:48 AM ET

The Marlins should be wise to trade Dontrelle. Why? He is simply not that good anymore! Only two years removed from his Cy Young contending campaign of 2005, Dontrelle has been an average starting pitcher - at best. His 2007 ERA has ballooned to 5.32, his current record is abysmal (9-15) and, while his strikeouts are down, his WHIP and home runs allowed numbers have increased each of the last two years. Dontrelle's innings are down and he has not throw a complete game all of 2007. His faulty mechanics are likely to blame for all of the above results. Hitters have adjusted to his high leg kick, flailing type delivery and have laid off the bad pitches. Over time, throwing across the body when pitching will result in a blown out shoulder, and there is no Tommy John surgery for shoulders! These injuries are far more damaging and problematic for the future than most elbow injuries. He needs a new pitching coach who can adjust his mechanics, but Dontrelle needs to be receptive to change. While he is still young enough and most people see the Dontrelle of two years ago, I would be wary of trading for a guy who's production has declined and is possibly on the verge of an injury.

Beinfest is right, if these guys would just start bearing down things would be rosy for the Marlins.

If everyone on that staff would just stop screwing around and start throwing no hitters the Marlins would only need to score one run per game! You don't need much offense, or defense when you simply just strike out the hitters!

Larry, you are a wild, beautiful genius.....

Now I've heard everything.

September 25, 2007  11:04 AM ET

Too little. Too late.

The Marlins should have traded him when he had value. Now, they're virtually guaranteed to get the short end of any deal. Another reason why the Marlins should be contracted and exhumed out of South Florida immediately.

The only teams that should even vie for Willis are ones that already have a great pitching coach and a decent pitching staff, ensuring the pressure won't be on him to be the ace. Any team that gets Willis expecting him to save their rotation is in for a huge disappointment.

September 25, 2007  12:50 PM ET

Dontrelle will look great in a Met uniform.

September 25, 2007  01:06 PM ET

Marlins should have traded him 2 years ago when he had value. Someone once said to me years ago that once the league sees him enough he will get hit hard and they were right. He looks like a #4 or 5 starter now, not the #1 he used to be. Marlins will be lucky to get a few minor leaguers for him (no not prospects just minor league players).

September 25, 2007  01:49 PM ET

If the Mariners don't throw close to the entire farm system at someone to get a player like Willis or anyone of that caliber in the offseason I'm gonna be pissed.

September 25, 2007  02:30 PM ET

But is he not good anymore or has playing for the Marlins in front of 400 fans finally given him a case of the whogivesashites? Maybe moving to a new team, a winning team, will given him a second wind?

September 25, 2007  03:57 PM ET

I think the Cubs should trade Dempster even up for him...even up for anyone...we`ll even trade him for Eternally fat Sid Ponson. The Twinkie-gobbling Cub closer still has value..The Ponce needs work... he can take Dontrelle`s place in the rotation.Am I awake? What was in those brownies again?

September 25, 2007  04:58 PM ET

Chuck! Are you on crack? I would maybe give up Jeremy Reed for Dontrelle only becuase we have a bunch of awesome OF's... Oh I would throw in Horacia Ramierez also. Dontrelle is now only a 4 or 5 slot starter now...

My friend you have not been watching the marlins this year. There 4 starters have been injury prone most of the year. Annibal Sanchez was out almost all season.Josh Johnson out most of the year too and Ricky nalsco most of the year as well ans Scott Olsen was just plain horrible. With all his arrest and stuff. thats why and they used call up and rookies. And Willis sucked horrible to this year. And there last in the league in defense with over 100 errors.

September 25, 2007  07:54 PM ET

If the Marlins, decide to move Willis their favorite trading partner's should make a move to get him. The Mets have 3 young stud pitchers major league ready and four young outfielders. One of each any combination except for Gomez and a Double A player. Should do the trick. The Amazing's would truely be that if they could pull this rotation off and they have the players to do it! Oswalt,Willis,Martinez,Perez,Maine. Minaya show us what you are made of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 25, 2007  08:10 PM ET

Sorry ovanjye but the Mets are unlikely to get Roy Oswalt for quite some time. He signed a 5 year deal for $73 million with the Astros next year. Do you think the Mets have the talent to trade for both Willis and Oswalt? Instead of trying to buy other teams' starting pitchers, the Mets should try to develop some of their own pitchers. Let Phil Humber and Mike Pelfry pitch next year, along with Maine, Perez and Martinez. How do you know how good these guys could be if you do not let them pitch? Seems like the team across the city, the Yankees have worked the young pitching in pretty well.

September 25, 2007  08:20 PM ET

Martinez will retire in January.
