Giants' surprising new leader

When Tiki Barber left the field for the broadcast booth, the Giants were left without their best clutch performer. Enter Plaxico Burress. Although he may seem to be an odd choice for a leader, due to his occasional arm-flailing and sometimes indifference to team rules, the 30-year-old Burress has emerged as one on the field in the first three games. Just witness what he did last Sunday, shaking off an admittedly disappointing first half and recovering with five catches for 86 yards in the Giants' 21-point second-half comeback.

Give the guy credit, he was the difference in that game offensively. He will drive a fan, and coaches too I suspect, crazy, but he is a talented receiver. I wonder how close he came to getting pulled in that game in the first half?

He is GOOD....He would be Great if he made all the catches rather than big drops at bad times. Just like Shockey. If this Giants team settled down on Defense and was more consistent on Offense........They are tough to beat.

after hearing tiki speak so kindly about his former teammates, its obvious tiki wasn' t a leader. he might have thought he was, but he wasn't.

September 26, 2007  07:23 AM ET

I guess he is finally growing up.

September 26, 2007  08:18 AM ET

Plaxico can be one of the greatest receivers in the league if he would just do the damn thing.

September 26, 2007  08:25 AM ET

Leader? Sure, in dropped passes...

Nah, kidding...sorta.

Consistency on offense is key. The stupid penalties, the antics, all that crap has gotta go. Let the scoreboard speak for you...

The D stepped up on sunday and I liked that...boy that Justin Tuck has a motor on him...

Duff man, approves.....OH YEAH!!!!

September 26, 2007  08:53 AM ET

he's always had the tools - he just lacks the work ethic. When he decides (IF he decides) to actually work hard, he'll be a very difficult receiver to stop - he's so tall that corners can't stop an airball, so all it will take is focus and hard work. Hope he gets his act together and starts producing for a team and quarterback that really need him

September 26, 2007  08:59 AM ET

It's uncanny how many times I hail mary to Burress when I play Madden....it's a shame it doesn't translate into real life...

74 dolphins can kiss my grits...

73 Dolphins?????

September 26, 2007  09:16 AM ET

I think this is a player realizing he's closer to the end of his career than he is the beginning. It's time to start leaving some positive memories of yourself with your organization and teammates. I hope he continues this because Eli needs positive guys around him if he is going to continue to develop.

September 26, 2007  09:23 AM ET

its the '72 dolphins you idiots!

September 26, 2007  09:39 AM ET

That Clown mask guy...he's cheerful

September 26, 2007  10:41 AM ET

idiots huh? pot, kettle, black???

His leadership can not be gaged by his performance last week, he was less than inspiring in the first half dropping balls. He made the difference when it counted though.
If he is to be a leader he needs to work real hard off the field as well as on the field.

Greatest first name in the history of professional football. A combination of "plastic" and "Texaco" or "Mexico". What name could be more in touch with popular culture? Anyway, he's a h ell of a receiver.

Frenchie Fuqua?

September 26, 2007  01:17 PM ET

Blood McNally?

September 26, 2007  01:38 PM ET

Oh man...can't stop laughing...Plaxico Burress as team leader...what does that say about the rest of the Giants?

September 26, 2007  01:51 PM ET

I agree with PW. Any person who rags on his team after cutting and running certainly isn't a leader.

I give credit to Plaxico for stepping up in a time when his team is badly in need of some leadership and structure.
