08:00 AM ET 09.16 | As the NL West race turns into the home stretch, the Giants are clearly a team capable of closing a 1/2-game gap on the Padres. [This] is Sept. 16, and the Giants are stronger than they were in April, stronger than they were in June, and almost certainly stronger than they have been since the Barry Bonds era started dissipating. Stronger and better, and maximizing what they have and taking advantage of who they are. That is true now and will be true no matter what happens in the final weeks. Yes, even a consistent skeptic of their past actions can see and say it.

when was bonds' heyday? it wasn't after 1998, that's for damn sure.

Touche. And I don't know how "great" this team actually is. They've got pitching but still no firepower. And Sandoval still isn't hitting consistently. Then again, pitching can win a world series, so if Lincecum and Cain start throwing fire consistantly, they'll certainly see some wins. There are always about a million 3-2 games in the playoffs too - that seems to be right up this teams alley.

Their starting pitching has looked very good of late, and their bullpen has also become a huge strength. But watching their offense this past week is worse than a root canal without novocaine

Maybe the Phillies will win a few games in their kleenax box of a ballpark, but I predict the Phillies will not be in the WS this year.

Right now, the pitching is as dominant as it has ever been. Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez dominate, and even Zito had a great start.

that has been the story for some time...perhaps the pitching is "hot" right now...they need more balance.

if the giants are not able to take the lead on their division, and unable to nockout the braves, the giants need to go home for vacation earlier, there is no need for a team effort been wasted!!

If I'm not mistaken, they are reducing the number of off days in the playoffs, so teams will need a fourth starting pitcher.

LIncecum, Cain, Zito, Sanchez, Baumgartner and Wilson.
No other team even closely matches up.

Agree, the Giants Pitching Staff seems to be peaking at the right time.
Pitching and Defense wins ballgames down the stretch.
The Giants seem to have this covered with Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez and Zito

If I recall correctly, Hamels didn't do such a great job in his last postseason go-round.
