Oilers may be courting trouble with Souray

08:10 AM ET 09.16 | Sheldon Souray may have impolitely called out the Oilers, but general manager Steve Tambellini may be hurting the team with his stance by keeping him away from camp. Isn't it considerably easier to trade an asset who's in an NHL jersey, playing games, especially one with the checkered injury past of Souray, than it is when that player is gathering dust and skating with, say, the University of Alberta Golden Bears during training camp? NHL teams want to see if Souray is not only productive with the puck on his stick, but healthy, don't they? The Columbus Blue Jackets could seriously use his bazooka from the point, in concert with speedy playmaker Kris Russell on the power play.

Did I miss something? Didn't Tambs put him on waivers and nobody even took a sniff? The story does come out of Edmonton where the Eskies just hired Eric "lock up your daughters" Tillman so I guess anythings possible.

Maybe their source for this article comes from Dump 'n Chase?

I would love to see Souray with the Jackets ...

Why would you want to cause trouble in your locker room further? No one wants him for the money he commands. Simply an issue of supply and demand. No one wants his services, including Edmonton, for the money he demands. Souray needs to change his stance and move on. Edmonton needs to stick to their guns. They will have a good team without him this year. Couldn't disagree more with this "news opinion".

correct - no team wanted to pick up his salary this summer, especially coming off an injury. I think most teams will be waiting to see how their training camps go (injuries, players making the team, etc.) - or even get 8-10 games in before making a trade like that.

Dump 'n Chase? Isn't that the title of the "Two and Half Men" episode where Charlie's fiancee swallows the engagement ring?

September 16, 2010  02:43 PM ET

That was a tough call that Tambellini made. I am split on it but it's good to see the GM have some nutrinos and do what he did. Souray does bring someything to the table and as a player I liked him, but no one is gonna take him at that price while he gathers dust. He is one tough SOB too and I haven't seen him lose too many fights, including the one where he broke his hand on Iginla's hard noggin. Time to cut bait on this guy and cut the losses.

I'm sick of this comment form everyone in the NHL "The price he's asking is too much!". I don't like it, because it's so hypocritical! If you make a contract out and sign a deal worth 5mil a season for 5 years(hypothetical), then don't complain about how much he's making, or anyone for that matter, unless you are willing to start signing players to lower amounts at the "beginning" of the contract that have performance based incentives. If they start doing this teams won't be in this mess year in and out, and people would stop complaining so much about how much an NHL player makes, especially when they don't perform, as they wouldn't get the bonuses.

MAKE EM COMPETE FOR MONEY!!!!

Just don't hit the links in Calgary. The mosquitoes are so big they're considered immovable objects.

The Souray of years ago is probably what you're referring to.
