Heat on Wilson early?

08:15 AM ET 09.16 | Ron Wilson isn't responsible for all 43 years of Cup drought, but that streak doesn't help. Wilson is in his third season as head coach in Toronto. He suffered a drop off last season, going from 24th overall in the standings with 81 points in 2008-09 to 29th and 74 points. Toronto's power-play and penalty-killing units were worst in the league last year. Isn't that a reflection of the coach and his staff? Wilson also doesn't get along with one of the team's top players, [Tomas] Kaberle. But the defenceman may be on his way out via a trade. The bottom line is that Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has to make a difficult decision if his club stumbles out of the gate. Does he fire his college teammate or stand by his old buddy, Wilson?

I predict the drop off won't be as bad this year. I mean 24th to 29th is worse than 29th to 30th right. And last in PP and PK can't drop off anymore, last is last. Ron Wilson for King. Please keep him Burkie, the rest of Canada loves it.

I dunno, if I'm Wilson and I have to put up with BB's (nonsense) and Kaberle's whining, I might welcome being fired.

Careful BF, comments like that will get you in trouble with Mr. "We were almost 23rd." LOL

The only reason he wasn't fired last year is because of the Olympics...The minute the losing starts (which in TO won't take long) he'll be gone.

This is just like the Pirates in baseball. When the team is no good, it doesn't matter who the coach is.

Please say it ain't so Swampy. The rest of Canada loves to see the incompetence, ineptitude, and dysfunction that are the Leafs. Why mess with a good thing? Brian and Ron forever!

They should just tank it. I mean, they really do suck but if they only win 20 game instead of 30-35 they'll be a lock for the basement. Wilson would be sent packing and they'll earn a top pick. They just have to keep top picks and actually use them. Other teams have mailed it in early, some for a few years at a clip, and have actually gone on to the SC a few years later.

You are forgetting one big thing about the Leafs tanking, they don't own their first pick next June. I chuckle when I hear the followers mention how they were the 7th best team in the East after the allstar break last year. Well when you look at how weak the Eastern Con is that isn't such a huge claim to fame. The papparzzi in TO keeps feeding the followers and they continue to take the bait that their team is on the right track. This truly is one derailed train wreck of an organization and the fans are as much to blame as all the inept management that has kept the revolving door spinning.

Well, they need to have some top picks to use, but they rather trade talent away for injured or over the hill duds. Burke has been better for the team than anyone in many seasons, and has people wondering, which is more than I can say for that other inept fool!
I like Burke( he will stand up for his players, more than most GM's I've seen), but cannot stand Wilson!

They have tried to imitate NY by signing oldies, and DET by signing older players at playoff time(it never worked). I like what Burke has done(other than Kessel, who was paid for with the diamond credit card, with draft day interest accumulating) with the D, and in net. If Kadri plays up to potential, they might not be as bad as some are saying(those some, are people that know something about the game, and look at the big picture), there is a possibility of them doing alright. Not being a major winner, but they should take a turn in th right direction, but I think that Wilson needs to go!

So you have indeed gone over to the Dark Side, Kinger. :-) I agree with you about Burke. He stood up for Dan Cloutier when he pulled a Bill Buckner on a Nic Lidstrom shot from the snack bar. Nucks are up 2-0 in the series and lose in six. Burkie swears it had nothing to do with Cloutier's impression of a bad Little League shortstop but Nucks' fans and media weren't buying. The Great One blamed me just because I was wearing my Wings' sweater and sticking pins in a Cloutier voodoo doll. Women, what are ya gonna do?

I dont know how Wilson got this far in his career. Surely he cant be as crusty and as much of a Richard as he seems on tv.
