Author Tom Callahan's flat assertion that Tom Coughlin was to be canned last December obviously was not verifiable. But one thing, however, was certain. Coughlin's replacement would not have been poor Charlie Weis.

think we all knew that story was bs

September 26, 2007  07:43 AM ET

"Poor Chariie Weis"? I guess he meant poor in the hapless yet well meaning sense.

September 26, 2007  08:29 AM ET

No I think he means poor in the "1st and the 15th" sense...

September 26, 2007  09:06 AM ET

he was doing a great job at ND last season at the time - and had JUST taken the job, of course he wasn't in the Giants' plans. Nowadays though, he may be in the running, but I gotta think ol' Weis will try to stay at ND to fulfill his obligations there - unless he's asked to leave after the season they are having!

September 26, 2007  09:25 AM ET

Poor Charlie? How so?

September 26, 2007  09:40 AM ET

I like that...I am replacing SLIGHTYLY LESS FAT TUNA..with PO' CHARLIES in future insults!

September 26, 2007  11:46 AM ET

Another surprise. This is surprise Wednesday. (Parcells = tuna, Weis = carp)

September 26, 2007  01:17 PM ET

I'll run this this carnival George!

September 26, 2007  01:41 PM ET

Don't worry, the media will still demand that ND gets a BCS game.

September 26, 2007  02:13 PM ET

JCMD, no doubt no doubt.

September 26, 2007  02:29 PM ET

For all his faults, Weis did bring in the most impressive recruiting class last year.

"But that's impossible! They suck!"

Yes. That's because they're freshman. They're going to give Weis more time in ND because it's the smart thing to do. Over the next few years, they will be a force in the NCAA once again. Until then though, at least we all have something to point at and laugh.

Carp? Or an anagram thereof?

"That's because Weis wouldn't take the Giants job - who would?"

-Marty Schottenheimer

September 26, 2007  02:42 PM ET

And you do very well, Truth.

September 26, 2007  03:03 PM ET

They will give Weis more time not just because of his recruiting class but because of the money they would have to pay to fire him. They made a mistake resigning him to that big contract after one good season.

September 26, 2007  04:34 PM ET

He'll be at Notre Dame until he drops dead on the field from a massive coronary attack.

September 26, 2007  06:42 PM ET

Winning a Super Bowl wasn't in the Giants' plans neither!!!!! WORD TO YOUR MOTHER, CHUCK!!!

September 26, 2007  08:13 PM ET

He wouldn't do good in a diet plan either.

PimpyLooka: what?! That's the most nonsensical thing ever written. What?! Do you even know what USC was like in the seasons immediately preceding Carroll's arrival? Your observations are completely worthless, Pimple.

P.S. Carroll is starting a true freshman as his center, and has others successfully producing in other capacities -- compare that to the performance of Weis' much vaunted freshmen.
