How to prevent more cheating

The spying scandal involving the Patriots appears to be over, with league officials saying they don't expect to impose further sanctions on the team or coach Bill Belichick for using videotaping equipment to steal the play signals of opposing coaches. But the question remains: What, if anything, can be done to try to prevent a repeat episode? The answer, aside from relying on coaches to be honorable, probably is the ratification this offseason of a proposal to allow one defensive player per team to have a communications device in his helmet connecting him to a coach on the sideline during a game. It would put the defense on even footing with the offense, given rules that allow the quarterback to be connected to a coach in that manner. It also would eliminate the need for defensive coaches to use hand signals for play calls.

I have an idea to stop the cheating. Dont allow video cameras at all just those people who do scketches at courtroom during trials that will limit them alittle bit

September 26, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Urnze, great article....I haven't read "File not found" in some time...

The skrimshaw idea is the pants kspice...

And the helmet transmitter on defense is the only logical answer...not only does it help keep play calling private but it renders your typical layman style espionage ie. a camera man on the field, irrelevant...

Now if they really wanna get high tech they are going to need to employ the skills of the No Such Agency....

September 26, 2007  08:39 AM ET

you could prevent it IF you didnt slap the coach on the wrist..

September 26, 2007  08:39 AM ET

Yeah, sorry Agent, the link didn't paste fully, but the story is on the ESPN site, and is by Greg Garber--there is a big picture of Belichick; you'll find the article there. I am not referring to the recent Easterbrook hype-piece.

The helmet radio is not a bad idea, but still not a good one. Defensive players shuffle on and off the field, and rarely is one player on the field for every snap. The QB, on the other hand, is on the field for each offensive play. Thus, the coach-to-QB radio is an effective solution. Unless a system could be devised that would account for defensive substitutions and specialized packages, I don't see the helmet radio as an entirely viable playcalling option on defense.

A Defensive communication device...Just what the Pats wanted from the start! Enjoy gameplanning against a Bellicheck defense next year! LOL!!!

September 26, 2007  08:52 AM ET

Do it like we used to in high school. Send the play in with the subs.

September 26, 2007  08:53 AM ET

Urnze, I don't think it would be that difficult to have the plays sent to multiple players. Nothing more complicated than a 3 or 4 way conference call. Big business does it all the time, so do I. So if both player A AND player B both have the equiped helmets then it wouldn't matter which one was out on the field, one of them would be able to relay the call to the team....

And if you go with one way commos, that's even easier...

September 26, 2007  09:17 AM ET

I agree, equipping multiple players is a viable solution, but that isn't the one the league has one the table. The solution you offer is simple, and avoids the complication of one radio for a player who may not always be on the field; now, the question is whether the competition committee and the league are gifted with the same level of insight...

Agent O are you suggesting an NFL Friends and Family thing? Maybe Verizon could get the contract.

September 26, 2007  09:22 AM ET

Anyone caught cheating should be urinated on publicly

September 26, 2007  09:37 AM ET

That's your solution for everything you tomcat!!!!!!!!!!!

The peoples' chicken likes golden showers!!

I think the communists brainwashed him

September 26, 2007  10:08 AM ET

On the spot castration for any cheating infractions

September 26, 2007  10:23 AM ET

Easy! Catch them and punish them! Pull their pants down at center field and give them a public flogging! That ought to do it! LOL (DC)

September 26, 2007  10:27 AM ET

or make them sign with the Raiders

September 26, 2007  10:39 AM ET

Urnze, yeah the common sense approach is not one I think the NFL has followed to any great degree...we'll just have to see....

Maybe they put metal detectors at the entrances so when the teams come out of the locker room onto the field they get searched...

texex, so who do you think belicheck will have in his 5??

September 26, 2007  11:00 AM ET

How about you send the teams and coaches a memo telling them not to cheat? Oh, that's been done already.

September 26, 2007  11:14 AM ET

Frankly, I don't see the what I like to call "the issue". By that, I mean, we need all the tools possible to prevent evil-doers from threatening our freedom to become corporate sponsors, go to f'ball games, buy what I like to call "tube steaks", and watch cheerleaders exercise their freedom of expression.

As you may remember, I know something about f'ball, having been a cheerleader myself. In fact, I almost wore my little cheerleading outfit when I landed on that aircraft carrier a few years back. That flight suit costume made my a.s.s. look kinda fat, I thought.

Anyway, we need all the surveillance equipment we can get to keep America safe. In fact, if Bill Belichick thinks it would keep America safer, I will authorize the extraordinary rendition of any opposing coach to some foreign country like Syria or Istambul or Billerica to crack his code. Maybe even water-board him a little bit, heh, heh... I like water.

And any squishy, Constitution-quoting, pinko who complains about it, clearly is not a Patriot.
