Recruit picks Cavs over Red Storm
Holy Cross High School hoop star Sylven Landesberg will announce his college choice at a press conference today, and numerous sources said he won't be going to St. John's. Instead, the 6-foot-5 senior is expected to head to Virginia, despite St. John's last-ditch recruiting efforts, which included Landesberg meeting with Lou Carnesecca.

Why would a kid today be impressed with Lou Canresecca? That's like asking Ara Parsegian to persuade a kid to to to ND.

I called this months ago. Why would he want to go to a commuter school in the middle of Queens that gets no exposure, where he can play in the ACC.

And for those who are wondering I am a St. John's alumnus and have been going to games at the Garden since Mark Jackson and Chris Mullen were there. I was 3 but I have been going. The program as we know it is over...we need to realize that.

Thanks Truth. You and I both know this but they are a legion of Johnnies who still believe that the best players in the 5 boroughs need to stay home. To me that's nuts. Not only are these guys getting a chance at increased T.V. exposure by going to play in the ACC or at the better Big East programs, they are also getting away from their neighborhoods.
Johnnie fans say that the lure of playing their games at the Garden should be enough, but considering the Garden now invites teams that have nothing to do with New York to play games their all season long whats the point.

Yeah, I do think the beginning of the end came with the name change from Redmen.

Also, what draw does Lou Carnesecca can still have? I'm 25 and I was around for the last few years of the Louie era. A 17 or 18 year old kid really wouldn't have a grasp of the St. Johns glory days. It's too far past them.
Still think it was funny they lost to St. Francis the night they dedicated the court in Alumni Hall to Carnesecca. How in the world could they have lost to the Terriers that night? LOL!

You know, it's too bad that today's kids and most of you commentators here DO NOT know or value how influential Louie Carnesseca has been in thousands of young men's lives - far beyond his St. John's record. Meeting THE MAN still should be enough for any prospect, whether they wind up in Queens or not! Louie is an amazing person, a true heavywieght in terms of who he is and what he's accomplished, mostly in people's lives. I'll bet that not a one of you here would know that Louie is responsible for hooking up nearly three generations of City college players, thousands of players, - no matter where they went to college - with pro gigs in Europe, me among them. Five minutes with the always inspiring, positive Louie Canesseca is a gift for anyone! He's right up there with Wooden in my book. Think about it, kids.

No offense but I met the great Carnesecca too and he is a great man. However, this story is about the recruiting of Sylven Landsberg and not the recruits of yesteryear. Before you come down off your pillbox you need to remember that the way you and I see Louie a lot of kids today don't. I am sure most recruits never even heard of the man, and that's the point I was making alohachris.
