USC chasing Irish commitment

When Pete Carroll talks, recruits listen. Even ones already committed to Notre Dame. Buford's Omar Hunter visited with Carroll over the phone Tuesday and received an offer from the coach of top-ranked Southern Cal. That doesn't mean the blue-chip defensive tackle has changed his mind about heading to South Bend. "I'm sticking with Notre Dame for right now," Hunter said. Buford coach Jess Simpson said several schools, including Florida, Tennessee and Auburn, still contact Hunter, who is ranked as the sixth best defensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com and the No. 78 prospect overall.

I think he is gonna stay. He is a perfect fit in a 3-4 defense. His size and the playing time should be enough. I don't think he would get in until his junior year at USC or Florida. Notre Dame would give him solid playing time next year in a formation that fits him best.

At USC, if you're good enough you get to play. Taylor Mays started as a freshman and is gonna be a 3 or 4 year starter. Everson Griffen gets plenty of reps this year. Sedrick Ellis is going to the NFL after this year. If Hunter is good enough, he'll play. If not, he won't.

Hrmmm lets see .. to pick the media "I" - Win button or not...tough one

September 27, 2007  08:46 AM ET

why would anybody pick notre dame over usc right now?

September 27, 2007  08:48 AM ET

Po' Charlie will be losing a lot more recruits in the next few months

September 27, 2007  08:53 AM ET

I would say you'd pick ND over USC right now because:
1) You want to play football - period.
2) Tradition is emphasized at ND and not so much at USC.
3) You want to stand out amongst your peers. Separating yourself from the pack is easier to do at ND than USC.
4) Getting exposure is key to you, winning or losing. For as highly-ranked as USC is, I see them play 3-4 times a year at most. I can see Notre Dame every single week of the season through one network or another.

I would say you'd pick USC over ND right now because:
1) You want to win. Now.
2) You want to be in the NFL, almost guaranteed if you start.
3) Competition with teammates doesn't bother you.

September 27, 2007  09:17 AM ET

This is just the recruiting game at work. Said it once, and I will say it again it means nothing until Signing Day.

September 27, 2007  09:37 AM ET

He'll end up a bust like Clausen.

September 27, 2007  10:10 AM ET

ERIC...what are you talkin' about? That Clausen kid's a human dynamo..just look at the affects he had on ND's offense

September 27, 2007  10:18 AM ET

just like reggie bush has been a bust in the nfl? shut up dude. he's a freshman with no offensive line.

September 27, 2007  10:22 AM ET

Pete Carroll is scum for exploiting another teams misfortunes. I hope it comes back to haunt him. He is a man who little moral fiber.

September 27, 2007  10:36 AM ET

Yeah, because coaches never exploit the misfortunes of other teams or coaches. Please.

September 27, 2007  11:00 AM ET

So Florida, Tennessee and Auburn, are also coached by people who are scums. This is a football post but it is funny concerning all of the grief that Kelvin Sampson, Indiana basketball, received for recruiting Eric Gordon. Everyone in Illinois called Sampson worse names than scum. Wolverine 2000, you are right, there is no honor among thieves!

September 27, 2007  11:37 AM ET

You are gonna talk down on Pete Carroll for dominating recruiting? That is what every coach's goal is.

USC does not have tradition? please clarify

September 27, 2007  11:40 AM ET

the coach at UT is definitely scum slippery rock. he runs the most crooked program in the country and he had the nerve to snitch out alabama a few years back

September 27, 2007  11:53 AM ET

This just makes my head spin.

September 27, 2007  11:54 AM ET

USC does not have tradition? They have the same number of national titles as ND has with the only difference being they have won a couple in the last few years and continue to be the number 1 or 2 team year after year. ND has won nothing in 20 years and is rarely, if ever, a player in the national title hunt. If the recruit chooses ND it is simply so he won't have competition, USC is loaded with talent.

September 27, 2007  12:00 PM ET

THE TRUTH ... Yea,119th in total offense. Ha ha! Next year they will be 110 in offense.

September 27, 2007  12:27 PM ET

yea eric i'm sure you've been a usc fan for a long time huh? even when john robinson was the coach and they were terrible right ?

yea, i thought not...just like the rest of the bandwagon trojan crowd.

September 27, 2007  12:33 PM ET

Actually ND was in the national title hunt in 1993 so it has
only been 14yrs, like that makes me feel any better. And if
you go back to the years from 1991 to 2001 collegeballfan
I don't think your program would have had anything to say
on any of these chats except maybe some of the same
things that are being said by us ND fans right now. As far
as tradition USC is right up there with the top pragrams,
and whether anyone wants to admit ,ND is in that group
also. ND's run of bad football at this point records wise,
I don't think is as bad as USC's was in their down turn.
