FSU finalizes cheating report

Florida State has finalized its initial report of "academic dishonesty" by 23 student-athletes, sending the details of a six-month internal investigation to the NCAA. Two football players, fifth-year wide receiver Joslin Shaw and sophomore defensive end Kevin McNeal, are involved in the investigation. Neither Shaw, or McNeal have played in FSU's first three games because of what coach Bobby Bowden called a violation of team rules. At the center of the report sent to the NCAA is the discovery that a pair of former athletic department tutors provided improper academic assistance to the nearly two dozen athletes, including providing answers to online tests and quizzes during the 2006-07 school year.

this is news to me. at least no star players are involved. only 2 out of 23 were football players. i guess that swim team really needed a boost to help keep them in the pool on saturdays! haha

The funny thing was the night of the incident with Geno Hayes and Surratt, Bobby was interviewed on the phone during the Miami vs. Texas A&M game. "Oh hang on sec, I've got an important call here"

hahaha

Every school has cheaters and players of questionable ethics but what is it about Florida State that gets the worse of the worse.

September 27, 2007  01:00 PM ET

If they had not violated the team rule about not going to class and taking tests to begin with, none of this would have happened. All it takes is a few bad apples to ruin a great tradition. If this keeps up, FSU will become an accredited institution and all the players will be expected to take tests.

September 27, 2007  04:15 PM ET

Bobby Bowden sucks.

September 27, 2007  04:46 PM ET

I think you could go to every D1 college and find this problem. Hell I know of guys in D3 that got away with cheating on test etc and the administration and professors didnt do anything about it

September 27, 2007  09:47 PM ET

umm.. where's the problem here? Ya mean we can't cheat in college?

September 28, 2007  10:40 AM ET

Is this really news? Pretty much common knowledge.

September 28, 2007  11:18 AM ET

I played D-2 Soccer and we had people in study groups getting their work done for them....EVERY program in America has the same problems, it doesn't matter what sport, College or University it goes on .The NCAA just picks the more severe cases to persue and bigger schools to try to deflect other schools from the same kind of scrutiny. People( students) cheated in the past and they will cheat in the future......

Toooooo Funny. Definitely the best comment this week. Salute!

umm....the football players involved weren't allowed to play. The faculty are the ones to place blame on. AND the athletes are the ones that leaked the info. I'd say FSU is handling it pretty well.
