Chargers GM under scrutiny

The Chargers' 1-2 start has the critics lined up to take their best shots at general manager A.J. Smith, the man who replaced his coach after a 14-3 season, trading Marty Schottenheimer in for Norv Turner. Smith communicates freely with his head coach these days, which couldn't be said a year ago. The relationship between Schottenheimer and Smith had turned frosty over the last year and a half of the coach's tenure, eventually rupturing in a dispute over coordinator replacements.

Firing Schottenheimer will get you fired before 2008.

And Marty will get another job in the NFL, you wont as a gm.

September 28, 2007  07:57 AM ET

About time.

September 28, 2007  08:30 AM ET

He's not getting fired. Regardless how underachieving the team is at this point you cannot deny Smith's ability to find talent. He has returned the team to respectability.

September 28, 2007  08:53 AM ET

cbarry, mediocrity <> respectability.

September 28, 2007  09:27 AM ET

I understand why he fired Marty. Marty has always had good regular season records, but never delivered in the playoffs. He knows there's a short window with talent like they have. But why in the hell do you hire Norv Turner? Now you won't even have the regular season record to hang your hat on.

September 28, 2007  09:28 AM ET

Good point cbarry, but more importantly than that, Spanos is friends with Smith. I don't really see Spanos firing him, more likely he'll just tell him to fire Turner and go find someone else.

September 28, 2007  09:59 AM ET

At 1 and 2, the entire front office is getting looked at...predictable...

September 28, 2007  11:29 AM ET

Firing Schottenheimer made about as much sense as if they had fired Tomlinson. Who fires a coach that goes 14-3. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It's common noodle. Now if they fired Schottenheimer after going 14-3, does that mean they will fire Turner when they finish 6-10 this season.

September 28, 2007  11:43 AM ET

What was this man thinking? It's not like Turner was a sucess in Washington.

After watching their first three games this year, I don't know that I'd call the Bolts respectable.

September 28, 2007  11:46 AM ET

sometimes, in business, you have to set your pride aside and do what is best for the organization - this guy couldn't do that, and he used his position to settle a grudge/dispute. Then he hired a guy who is a proven co-ordinator, but also a proven loser as head coach. Look where it got him. He likely won't get fired, but he certainly hasn't put himself in any position to win executive of the year for this season. There's still an awful lot of season yet, and the Chragers have enough talent that they can turn this around and still make the playoffs...I'll wait and see when it comes to how Turner's job looks...but right now it ain't pretty

September 28, 2007  12:40 PM ET

AJ smtih is an idiot!!!!!! it's as simple as that. Hopefully Spanos will fire him but I doubt it.

September 28, 2007  03:16 PM ET

He wont be fired. They will get a proven coach next year, if Norv does not turn things around. The player morale looks terrible. LT looks like a guy on the end of his career who has lost his ability to help his team win in his post game interviews. I dont know what Norv did to this team. He is supposed to be a good developer of QBs. But Rivers is not looking so hot this year.

September 28, 2007  03:29 PM ET

I realize Marty has struggled in the post season but at least he gets there. Stat of the day for AJ Smith; no team has ever won the Superbowl without making the playoffs. Moral of the story, you gotta be in it to win it.

September 28, 2007  04:10 PM ET

It sounds like Smith has a case of Jerry-Jones-Syndrome---that's when your ego is more important to you than having a head coach that will win you championships.

September 28, 2007  05:49 PM ET

AJ Smith really screwed this team royal, about time he faced the music or hatchet :-)

September 28, 2007  05:53 PM ET

MARTY COULDNT WIN A PLAYOFF GAME TO SAVE HIS LIFE MORONS!!!! Who cares about 14-2, 15-1, or 16-0!!!! Nobody cares about the regular season the Chargers are the Dallas Mavericks of the NFL!!!!! WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP NOT A GREAT REGULAR SEASON!!!!!

September 28, 2007  08:07 PM ET

Thats a stupid thing to say.....that regular win records don't matter. First off, you dont get to the playoffs with out winning in the regular season. Next, lets take a look at Bill Cowhers record in the post season; after all, he is currently the most sought after coach now in the NFL. After 17 years, he one 1 Superbowl....and some how hes a genius. Sure he has won quite a few playoff games...but hes only one 1 Superbowl in his 17 years.

Marty is the one who made this team respectable by getting them to win and in the most challenging division around. Getting beat by the Patriots or the Colts or some other uber team in a playoff isn't a reason to fire a coach who puts fans in the seats because they now have hope for a winning season.....and in the end....its all about putting people in seats and selling luxury boxs.

September 28, 2007  08:08 PM ET

ughhh...replace one with won........

September 28, 2007  08:38 PM ET

LMAO... Hey, all you Charger fans who think you got the best QB in the Eli deal, how come Rivers has not picked up the slack and carried the team to victory. That is what a top QB would have done in the NFL. Or was he only as good as LT all along, in which case ,he is very ordinary....Besides, does it really matter, it looks like the Colts and the Pats are in a class by themselves this year, and your team, like all the others are just images in a rear view mirror...

September 28, 2007  08:55 PM ET

Have you seen the rest of the AFC West? The Broncos won on last second field goals against the Raiders and Bills and then got dominated by the Jags. Regardless of how bad the Chargers may look so far, I'm pretty sure they'll win the division and get a 3 or 4 seed. Now the real question is if Norv leads them to a 1-1 record in the playoffs would you consider it an improvement?
