Why Bills should hire Cowher

If Bills owner Ralph Wilson genuinely hopes to see his team win a Super Bowl, he should aggressively pursue Bill Cowher as coach and whatever other titles the former PSteelers coach might demand. The Bills figure to sell out every home game this season. But if this year's team wins only two or three games, there probably will be plenty of empty seats in 2008 unless some major moves upgrade the product on the field.

wont happen. cowher left a small market team with tight purse strings. why would he go to the program with the tightest purse in all of the nfl?

no.

he'll go someplace close to home, or someplace the owner will let bill spend and sign players as he pleases.

see carolina, washington, dallas, etc.

Cowher will take the job if the first thing he can do is wheel Marv Levy into an old folks home and get a proper GM.

September 28, 2007  09:22 AM ET

They're probably going to have to stand in line, and unfortunately for them they will be at the back of the line.

September 28, 2007  09:40 AM ET

I don't want to change coaches so soon. We just started getting the right guys to run a cover-2 and if we hire Cowher we will spend another 2 to 3 years getting the right people to run a 3-4. Cowher is a better coach but the change over isn't worth it.

Didn't Bill Cowher retire? (DC)

September 28, 2007  09:49 AM ET

Eh, I think the giants have a better shot at winning with Cowher and I'm pretty sure he knows that as well...I don't see this happening, after all, he signed on as the coach of the 4 time national champion Steelers, not the 4 time national chump Bills....

My money is on him being smarter than that....

Buffalo is the capital of arctic hell.

September 28, 2007  09:53 AM ET

Do you have any idea how many job offers he is going to get (and probably already receiving)? He will be able to write his own ticket - and you gotta think he will pick the team with the best chance to win now, or the one closest to home, maybe. Either way, it ain't Buffalo. A poor starting qb, lazy receivers, no real running back, a defence that got gutted this off-season, a GM who is temporary at best, and an owner who doesn't spend money are not a recipe for success in any book I've read.

Think of the teams that will be looking for a new coach next year:
Giants (safe bet they'll dump Coughlin, barring some miracle)
Panthers (looking like Fox - a great coach - may be in trouble)
Jaguars (Del Rio is on borrowed time)
Redskins (maybe, if he retires)
Chiefs (at this rate, anyway)
Seahawks(?) (with a big drop off, has Holmgren lost that locker room?)
Chargers (maybe - as ridiculous as it seems, if that team keeps it up...)
Bucs (Gruden HAS to make the playoffs this year)

And I'm sure there a many more we can talk about - oh, and as i disclaimer, so I don't get guys losing their minds over this, I am simply naming the teams where I have heard rumours of the coach's heads being on the block. There is no malice or anything, so please, don't come at me over this.

if I'm Cowher, and have my choice of these teams, I'd be seeing you in Carolina...that's all I have to say about that

September 28, 2007  10:50 AM ET

I wish this could happen ... but it won't ... buffalo is doomed to mediocrity until they relocate ... to toronto I hope!

September 28, 2007  10:53 AM ET

Cowher is going to take over the Panthers next year and Fox is going to the New York Giants. Gruden is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Crap. I was hoping he would be the next Michigan coach. We need a competent coach, we need a competent coach who understands defense, and....we need a competent coach.

September 28, 2007  11:41 AM ET

Cowher will be the either the Giants' or Ram's head coach. The Bills have a way of making a small splash with coaches.

September 28, 2007  12:09 PM ET

And pray tell what are the Bills going to pay Cowher in? Shiney Rocks and sticks?

September 28, 2007  12:30 PM ET

This isn't news; it's not even a rumor. It's a speculative column. It shouldn't be quoted in Fan Nation.

September 28, 2007  12:43 PM ET

Its the speculation that fuels the innuendo..which in turn fuels the hyperbole, which translates to the BS

September 28, 2007  12:47 PM ET

I hate to agree with anyone from New England but it is true, the Bill's have the tighest of all purse strings. Ralph will go to his grave holding all his money - and will have the last laugh! I'm a longtime Bills fan but there really is no hope with the current ownership and management. I appreciate all that Marv Levy has done for the organization but he has set it back even further than it already was. I like some of his draft picks but you just can't give up your veteran leaders and expect to get better. They had a good thing going and then they give up on Clements, Spikes and Flecther, their true leasders, to sign a bunch of average offensive lineman. Oh the joy of being a Bills fan!

September 28, 2007  01:33 PM ET

Cowher didn't leave Pittsburgh to watch his kid's play basketball, it was over money - pure and simple. He wanted to be paid absolute top dollar - the Steelers weren't going to meet the price.
I firmly believe he'll be back in the game sooner, not later to a team that meets two requirements. First - deep pockets to meet his price - so scratch off any small market team from the list - he wants at least 7 mil a year. Second - he doesn't want a team in rebuilding mode, he wants a team with some talent already in place much like the Steelers were when he took over. Best bets based on this? Washington or the Gints.

September 28, 2007  01:49 PM ET

Cowher would definitely take the Browns job is he was offered. He has some nice young talent to develop in Joe Thomas, Edwards and Quinn. He is from the area, and would be an icon there even moreso than Pittsburgh. And for all the "loyalty" responses I am bound to get, I AM a Steelers fan. Die hard. You have to face the facts that pro sports is a business. The Cowher era in the Steel City is a past chapter. No one should harber a grudge against a guy that gave 100% of his effort and won a ring in Pittsburgh. he is now free to coach anywhere he likes, and Cleveland will appeal to him big time.

Not to toot my own kahoonays but I'm lookin' for a new decider type job in the near future. Look at the job I did with the Rangers. And that oil company. And that country, America.

Plus I'm a good role model for the drinker and driver types. And the ones who think God picks 'em to win and such and play with brain damage.

First thing I'd do is bomb Foxburrow and Indianapples and Pit's Burg. I have intelligents that Bellichuck was involved with 9 eleven and that Manning fella does commercials on El Jazz Era, doesn't he?

Anyhow, Unca Dick will be my General Manager and Condi can head up the cheerleaders and such.

And the first thing I'll do is get rid of that socialist revenoo sharing, so the rich teams can have all the advantages they deserve. Buffalo's rich, right?
