08:24 AM ET 09.24 | David Ortiz will make for an interesting sidebar to the Red Sox offseason. Listening to [Ortiz] after he drove in four runs in Boston's 6-1 win over Baltimore on Wednesday night, it doesn't sound like he wants to take a pay cut to stay with the Red Sox in 2011. Ortiz was asked if he would consider taking a pay cut from the club option of $12.5 million for 2011 just to remain in Boston. "I don't feel like going anywhere else but if I have to, I have no choice," Ortiz said. "We'll see, we???'see how things go. We'll see. I took a pay cut already, five years ago. That's some homework for you."

Yeah, well I don't think anyone wants to pay you that. Sorry big daddy.

September 24, 2010  08:29 AM ET

Who the hell wants to take a pay cut??? If that was me... Trade me ...See yah.. It's a business decision.

September 24, 2010  08:32 AM ET

He's not worth $12.5 million...all he can play is DH and he hits .165 the first rwo months of the season....no thanks

September 24, 2010  08:32 AM ET

So he's gonna take a pay cut to play somewhere else?

September 24, 2010  08:53 AM ET

They should pay him by the pound. A guaranteed escalator clause

September 24, 2010  09:06 AM ET

probably the most over-rated/over-paid player in baseball...he is terrible until about August...he ought to just be glad he knew someone and got into baseball or he would be (like most professioinal athletes) down at McDonalds flipping burgers and fries.

He's worth the money.. One, like it or not hes the face of the team; sells jerseys, bobble heads, you name it. You don't let your guy leave for a mil or two. Ask the Yanks (Jeter), he might not be as good as before; but worth everypennie of the 20 mill he gets a year. Why, because he pays his own way, people want to see him.

hasnt been the same since the PEDs...

The only cut on the Sox should be Franconna the moron.

Exactly, it's all business.

He isn't the same after Manny's departure...

... they formed the best 3/4 combo in baseball during their years together.

It's situations like this that make players who DO take pay cuts (either because they recognize their true value or because they want to help free up $$$ to sign other players) look like heroes.

Apparently, you haven't followed his entire Red Sox career...

... just the last 2 years.

I am fairly certain that if they paid Papi in penus....he would stay

Papi like penus

as much as I can't stand Ortiz, I think you are right. Pedroia and Youk are the most important players, but Ortiz is the only remaining, semi-productive connection between the 2004 and 2007 WS teams and the fans. Even though he's cheated and cried to the press about the criticism recieved earlier in the year...many in beantown still give him a pass and get down right orgasmic when he hits a HR.I would also agree with Papi that he did take a pay cut 5 yrs ago...problem is now that its very difficult to justify a large or long term contract. If he goes elsewhere, he will not have the stage that he has today and he won't be as admired. The sox are in a pickle here...If I were a GM, i'd let him walk and focus my efforts on Beltre and Vmart and the middle relief. All of the other pieces are in place. Easier said than done.

Vmart staying is not a lock. Apparently they offered him a 2 year deal and he turned it down as expected.

Yea a fella that brought two WS to a franchise who was a study in pissing all over themselves for 80+ years NEEDS to go!

September 24, 2010  09:31 AM ET

Sox don't negotiate like other teams...we will see what other teams offer him, then we will see if the sox match. Sox will low ball him. Maybe they should. definite fan favorite.

Jose Bautista hits 50 HR's and we have no mention of it on here? I am tired of this goodtime charlie....

"All of the other pieces are in place"?

Possibly, some big IFs in that statement.

Starting pitching is questionable due to Beckett, Lackey, and Dice K not being effective, there is no power outside of Ortiz, who's playing left field (assuming Ellsbury in center), etc.

Boston has many questions and probably hoping most will be answered internally.
