10:35 AM ET 09.26 | It was the Rangers coach who defused what could still be another NHL vs. Ilya Kovalchuk case. The Devils will have to find their own solution to being susceptible to tough guys and agitators like Sean Avery. The NHL is expected to look at what Rangers GM Glen Sather thought was a "throat slash" gesture by Kovalchuk towards Avery, but was corrected by John Tortorella. "It was just zip your mouth. No slash. None of that," Tortorella said after the Rangers came back for a 5-4 overtime exhibition victory over the Devils in Newark last night. The gesture came in the third period, after Avery refused a second time to fight David Clarkson, and following an earlier skirmish between Kovalchuk and Avery.

"Tortorella denies Kovalchuk 'throat slash"

He's being safe! Don't want to make the ruthless Kovie mad, and have him on the scoring warpath when the Rangers play the Devils!

Avery! I laugh whenever I see that name. It's a joke in itself!

I'm not sure you understand the phrase 'It's a joke in itself.'

September 26, 2010  02:16 PM ET

Torts know the gesture well as he is using it constantly on Avery to zip it!
When the season starts he won't be ducking so easily...this guy will never quite get it.
I'd wager he will crash and burn himself out of N.Y favour this season somehow. Just a feeling I have.

Sather should have a lot more to be concerned about than whether another player made a throat slashing motion to his enforcer/thug/village idiot in a preseason game. On the other hand why would anyone think that Avery would actual stop trash talking just because someone on the other team told him to?

I'll remember to keep you in mind when I need to know what I mean. Oh and great comments! Hockey lover, or Vogue defender?

I'm going with the latter! I wonder if you understand what I'm saying now???? I'll bet you do, but won't admit it in front of friend(s)........you don't come off that comfortable!

Tell that to the English professor, and Dr. of common phrases and their meanings! Just curious why he came on here? At least leave a comment about the subject, if your going to pick at a, pick at a pick at a person!

Avery is just that. I know there are those that love him, but not in many areas outside of MSG, or the Vogue office. He was loved in Dallas, which is where his career should have ended, but nope! G Buttramm, must be a fan of the little guy!

He's a disgrace to the term pest, as it applies to the game of hockey.

I will cheer loudly in the streets the day his concussion comes a callin! He's mouthy, and an idiot, and if he really liked the game , or had true respect for it, he'd play for real once and awhile!

Enforcer??? Who does he fight? Thug? not strong enough! Idiot? YES OH YES!!!!!!!!!!

I don't disagree with the general premise of your post, but I will quibble with your assertion that he is an enforcer. He is without a doubt one of the biggest cowards in the NHL. I want him and his soul mate Matt Cooke locked up in a cage until no one comes out.

I don't know why I put enforcer in there. I should have just stuck with thug and village idiot. In my mind a thug is anyone who is constantly playing dirty, unless they are a Penguin of course. (LOL) I'm hoping that Cooke gets away from the cheap shots and sticks to playing hockey.

Avery is awesome. He does exactly what he is supposed to do. Hockey's culture is so hypocritical. If a guy tries to draw a penalty by calling you (or your girlfriend) names and taking cheap shots, he's considered a disgrace to the game. However, no worries when it comes to punching guys in the face or slew (sp?) footing players. He was also called every name in the book when he came up with a new way of screening the goalie. Somehow, the NHL "code" was violated because Avery was smart enough to turn around and face Brodeur. The NHL knew that he'd found a great new innovation and quickly put a rule against it. All you losers stop whining. Avery is the best agitator in the game today. In fact, he's among the best in NHL history along with Ted Linsemen, Claude Lemieux and Matthew Barnaby.

Probably make the Hall of Fame, eh? He's a winner? Everybody's out to sign him.
