Big changes hinted in Detroit

08:04 AM ET 09.27 | Not even the manager knows what Detroit will look like in 2011. The Tigers do have the makings of a fine starting rotation, with Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer at the top. Rick Porcello also should be better. Cabrera is having an MVP season, but obviously, they need more hitters. They definitely need more bullpen guys and more gamers, veterans who don't get shaken by big moments. There's no room for sentimentality, and the Tigers showed it last off-season when they dealt Curtis Granderson for Jackson, which worked out nicely.

I think its time to rebuild in Tigertown starting with Leyland

September 27, 2010  09:36 AM ET

Predictions: Bonderman-gone. Laird-gone. Magglio-back. Inge-back. Damon-gone. Peralta-back.

Why would you want peralta back with Inge?? Just curious where you see him fitting in?

We have a good foundation to be a great team, but other bonehead moves by Dumbrowski have killed us. We need to cut ties with Leyland, Bonderman, and Damon. Leyland is a classic example of a manager who over-thinks every situation, makes moves that shouldn't be done, and then it turns into a catastrophe. 8 million for Damon to bat .275 and throw like a girl was just plain lunacy. Bonderman is 67-76 with an ERA of 4.84, yet makes $12.5 million per season. I think the Tigers were still paying the majority of Willis' $12 million and Robertson's $10 million contracts.

These are just predictions, not necessarily what I would do. I think they'll pick up Peralta's option, play him at shortstop, and see how it goes. I can't see the Tigers going after Beltre, and what good shortstops are on the market this year?

Peralta has done well in a Tigers Uni and has been suprising good a SS. since he can play a fair SS and a solid 3rd he has more flexability going into the off season for us to upgrade at either position and have him sink into the other. Inge may be back- he is a franchise face and the longest tenured Tiger we have now- but he seems to be injury prone and sucks at all the wrong times. I dont wanna hear form the defensivly minded only that its just his knees and blah blah blah- he sucks. We have plenty of younger and more inexpensive options outside of Inge to go with when needed. We have options for internal solutions in house from last seasons draft if Peralta covers 1 more year. Detroit needs relievers and bats.
Maggs will come back but Inge needs to go.
Off the books-
D-Train
Nate Robertson
Jeremy Bonderman
Garald Laird
Johnny Damon
Brandon Inge
Bobby Seay
Jhonny Peralta
Magglio Ordonez

We should just pick up Peraltas option as the SS market sucks and so does the 3b unless Reyes and Wright hit the market if the Mets fold...
We could and should get both Magglio and Seay to a decient incentive laden contract.
We should outright release Carlos Guillen so Maggs can full time DH.
We should pursue an outfielder like Werth or Crawford and snage one of them as a top priority
Then sign 1 or 2 middle tier relievers to add more vet stability (an oxy moron when it comes to bullpen descriptions- I know)
Then look into the catching Market with someone like Buck or even V-Mart who could share 1B or DH as well as catch off and on to spell Miggy at 1st or Avila Catcher...
Finally the Tigers have Oliver and Turner fast tracking through the system and one or both of them ae capible to be in the rotation next season. Which not only removes the possiblity of Bondo coming back but would also make Galarraga tradible...
I would love to get another starter- but if push comes to shove and we spend the money on bats and relievers- and we have alot to talk trade with- then I would be happy if we didnt land a starter considering the status of the arms and outfielders we have in our farm.
Every other team knocks the Tigers farm but it has more rookies playing than any other team with its win loss record. Boesch, Wells, Sizemore, Avila, Rhymes, and Worth. None of them under the mendoza line and playing respectibly... We could be alot worse- and should look at the off season as still something that with the right couple of pieces we could be a solid threat to the Cental Champion Twinkees...
IMO

I agree on Peralta as well- his SS mediocracy abut above average bat has been a big pick up for us the last half of this season... Need I remind anyone that we started the season with Adam Everett??????

The tigers have lots of problems, and need lot's of new players, unfortunatly they could swap rosters with the yankees and it wouldn't do them any good. With leyland slated to come back next year the only place this team is headed is in a downward spiral.it's unfortanate that double DD and illitch can't see through this old washed up , the game has passed him bye,chain-cigarrette smoking marlboro man. They could also do a number on their roster overhaul by trading that drunk, overpaid, overweight ,liquered up with the patron'e piece of shat M. cabrerra . If they don't get something for this guy soon, before serociuous of the liver set's in,they'll be paying for that bloated contract for years to come.

i would say that the tigers needs to start by replace every coach on every department, and lets not forget leyland, and the general manager, can the tigers bring in ozzie guillen? or joe torre? who knows it may turn to be a good move!

September 27, 2010  02:10 PM ET

Ya trade Cabrera rather than build around him especially when you consider he's having his best year as a pro (despite no protection in the lineup for the last 70 or so games) and the team payroll is shedding $60+ million that can buy some bats to get Cabby some help. Allow me to speak for all Tigers fans when I say we are all very, very grateful you are not the GM of the Detroit Tigers baseball club.

September 27, 2010  02:16 PM ET

Bringing back Peralta makes sense because his stats with Detroit have actually been pretty solid and his defense at SS has been adequate. He's only hit .258 with the Tigers but 36 RBI and 8 HRs in 50 games is pretty solid and it seems he's done a good job of moving runners along as well as getting them in from 3rd too. In an ideal lineup he hits 6th for us next season.

Great point. I hope they go after Carl Crawford this offseason, he'd be a great addition and would make that outfield really good defensively.
