Bears GM won't rush Rex's future

Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said it's too early to close the book on Rex Grossman, but he sounded realistic about the future prospects of the former first-round draft pick. Hopes were high for Grossman entering his contract season, and no one was more invested in his success than Angelo, who stood squarely behind him through two serious injuries. Angelo's tenure has been littered with bad quarterbacks such as Jonathan Quinn and Chad Hutchinson and washed-out veterans such as Chris Chandler and Kordell Stewart.

Jerry Angelo needs to be looking over his shoulder. Sooner or later the QB situation will come back to who started it..

October 1, 2007  09:09 AM ET

Jerry's done a good job.

But it's his job to lose.

And he'll lose it.

If they had an RB who could make some gains when he got the ball they wouldn't be in this mess. It has long been Bears policy to have amazing defences supported by a running offence and a lower quality QB. They have the lower quality QB, they have the "D" (if the offence wouldn't exhaust them with their constant 3 and outs), but they have nobody who can run the ball. There is no secret to the Bears' offence, its been the same for about 20 years or so, but if they could get their RB situation in order, it would open up the receievers and whichever QB they happen to have in that day will actually have the opportunity to throw to open receivers. Tough to throw when opposing defences don't repsect your run

Go Canada, I don't understand how you can keep the defense, as strong as it is, fresh throughout the game if you have but a running game alone...

Hell you might as well put nine on the line and direct snap to the RB if that's the case, but you and I both know you need to be able to pass the ball to keep the defense from crowding the line...long story short, you need a qb that can make plays...if you don't have an o-line worth worth as much as the eagles last night then you have to design a scheme to get the ball out and quickly. That's is a QB's job...you need someone who can read defenses and change things up on the fly....the bottom line is that the bears don't have that....in anyone...

That's why the defense is so banged up...even an offense that takes the back seat to the defense needs a quality QB....and the offensive coordinator is a lame duck, he definately needs to go....

October 1, 2007  12:03 PM ET

Hey, Angelo! How about you get some competent receivers, a running back that isn't Nerf-soft, and an o-line that isn't collecting social security checks on the side. Is it really that much easier to keep blaming the quarterbacks for this everything instead of just admitting the truth of the matter? That this entire offense is pathetic! Get all those pieces in place first, especially the line, or it won't matter at all what tackling dummy you line up under center.

October 1, 2007  12:33 PM ET

Oh how I miss Thomas Jones! What were they (Angelo, Smith, etc) thinking?!?!? This isn't 20-20 hindsight - it was obvious all along.

And how does Ron Turner avoid much of the blame for the Bears offensive offense? His play calling and play designs are at best the stuff of also rans, not champions!

October 1, 2007  01:22 PM ET

Oh how I miss an offensive line that could block and pick up a blitz!!! Everyone talks about Benson and Grossman but they're to blame as well.

October 1, 2007  01:49 PM ET

George is kind of in shock by the numbers the Lions offense put up. 34 points. Yikes! That is no "Bear" defense. Then again, nearly the whole starting secondary was out. And Briggs. They did play well for three quarters though. Why did it collapse all at once? Turnovers?

October 1, 2007  02:30 PM ET

Things are not looking good for DA Bears. This offense needs to be built from scratch. They need a new offensive line, QB, WR and RB. The only position they got is TE, but of corse they don't bother using them enough.

October 1, 2007  02:58 PM ET

Rush it, he's bad, it's ok this time to get him out the door.

October 1, 2007  04:28 PM ET

WHAT FUTURE ......?

October 1, 2007  05:38 PM ET

The Bears most definitely need to draft an OT in the 1st or 2nd round next year, and possibly another QB as well. Fred Miller is killing us!

October 1, 2007  06:46 PM ET

John Tait & Ruben Brown looked like fools too! The left side of the line was a sieve against the Lions. It's like Madden says, the running and passing game start with the offensive line. And the ENTIRE Bears O-Line has been... Well, offensive.

October 1, 2007  09:42 PM ET

Oh? Rex Grossman has a future? Only in Jerry's mind. His stupid stuborness will come back to bite him in the arse. Instead of securing a real QB and a couple of receivers who can actually catch the ball and hold on to it from the several that were available in the offseason, he was busy planting the flag by Grossman and forgot all about improving his team's O-line. Only in Chicago is such ineptness tolerated and rewarded. (DC)

I said it when they hired Angelo, that he wasn't a great talent evaluator. It was the McKays that were behind Tampa's resurgence NOT Angelo. Angelo was crazy about mediocre QBs like Dilfer and the now nowhere-to-be-found Shawn King.

The Bears also could have got Philly's director of football operations Tom Modrak instead, he fell right into their lap when he was fired by the Eagles as the Bears were conducting their search. Chicago was bristling with the possibility that the Bears would hire him.

But (as always) he cost too much!

See, Angelo came nice and cheap as a FIRST TIME General Manager - just the way the McCaskeys like em! The McCaskeys are in love with second and third-tier candidates: FIRST TIME General Managers, FIRST TIME Head Coaches, and aweful starting QBs that would be lucky to be second string on any other team in the NFL. And that includes Grossman, who Angelo traded DOWN to get. Angelo probably thought he was a genius for doing it and thought he had the "steal of the draft". Remember firejerryangelo.com and the littany of his screwups on it?

I also said last year that Bears fans would regret it if Angelo was re-signed to another deal based on the Super Bowl appearance and the incredibly easy schedules they had the past two years that made them look better than they really were. EVERY other team in their division had new head coaches last year because they were so bad the year before. That's an unprecedented level of total division suckiness!

As usual Bears fans are seeing the light only after the train has already run them over: Angelo is as bad (with his offensive picks) as he is good (with his defensive picks). And you now have years more of them on the way!

Good thing you got Angelo cheap though eh? Somebody tell Angelo that the defense being good doesn't matter when it's negated by an offense that is a total joke.

Note to the McCaskeys: CHEAP doesn't work.

October 2, 2007  10:52 AM ET

The McCaskeys don't give a rat's a*s*s as long as Bears fans continue to buy tickets and merchandise. They could care less! Fans in any other town would demand the best but here, they settle for whatever. That's why most of the pro-sports teams in this town suck! The Bears made it last year? Good enough for another 10 years! The White Sox won it all? Good enough for another 40 years! The Cubs made the post-season? Good enough for another 15 years. The Blackhawks.....well.....what can you say about the Hawks? They sucked for the last 20 years and they still suck! Mediocrity seems to be good enough for this town and.....as long as tickets sell....the owners don't give a care! (DC)

October 2, 2007  12:16 PM ET

I think the Jags will make a big bid for Grossman in the off season.

October 2, 2007  01:44 PM ET

DCruiser, nicely done; it's sad but that how things are in Chi-town. The Cubs actually threw a rally for getting into the playoffs, who does that?

October 2, 2007  05:55 PM ET

bears dont need an offence just get there defence healthy and they can win games by playing defence all game and scoring from the mistakes the other teams make and the turnovers they inflict.

October 2, 2007  05:57 PM ET
