08:44 AM ET 09.29 | Jason Varitek would like to return to baseball in 2011. To do that, though, the veteran catcher and longtime Red Sox captain knows he may have to sign with another team. So, after the Sox' remote playoff hopes vanished [Tuesday] night, Varitek got emotional about his future. "You try not to think about it," Varitek said, his eyes watering, "and I hope you guys don't ask me too much about it over the weekend. But it's there. Definitely." Varitek, 38, will be a free agent after the season, and the Red Sox have decisions to make regarding their catching situation. Starter Victor Martinez also will be a free agent, and the Sox have high hopes for recently acquired Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

The Sox should explore signing him for back up money and keep him around. He was flourishing in the back up role until he got hurt and brings leadership and knowledge of the game that are in short supply.
Most Red Sox fans would love to see Tek stay in Boston as a coach after his playing career is over.

High hopes for Salty? Seriously? They need to hire Mackey Sasser as his personal instructor.

See #2. I don't know of any of my friends who think Tek is starting catcher material at this point in his career.

Relax...
... they were a good team this year. The injuries to Youk and Pedroia hurt tremendously. Not to mention Ellsbury.
Varitek is a 38 year old catcher. He may stay for a reduced salary, but, his days of catching regularly are done.
I still remember his tussle with A Rod during 2004:)

They weren't exactly a doormat this year.
Aren't they on pace to win 90+ this year?

He wouldn't be bad as a backup. He's a great team leader and the young players could learn a lot from him. His work ethic has never been questioned.

You sir are a syphalitic man-humper...
Varitek is no where near one of the best catchers in the game....not now and certainly not in his steroid laden prime. If he comes back next year he will probably be assistant bullpen catcher. Your Sox are done....done I tell you!
