Meyer on McElroy: Best in the business

08:52 AM ET 09.29 | Urban Meyer is a results guy, and, as such, has high praise for Greg McElroy. Meyer has always said there's only one way to evaluate quarterbacks, and it's not touchdown passes or 300-yard passing games. It's victories, and McElroy has a bunch of them. ... "Intelligence far above anything else, but obviously I do not know him very well and I have only competed against him one time. Someone made a comment that he hasn't lost since seventh or eighth grade or something like that, so he's obviously the best quarterback in the business right now. You people [the media] will probably pick apart his throwing motion or something like that, but he's a winner. [We have] a lot of respect for winners."

Way to throw in a (not so) subtle dig about criticism of Tebow's throwing motion there Urban.

He's not crappy, he's just average and makes up for a lack of physical skills with smarts. that's all you need to do when you hand the ball off and let the defense win for you.

I think he's a little better than that. He continues to develop and is playing better/smarter this year. Plus I'm impressed with the Rhodes Scholar thing. He's probably the smartest guy in Tuscaloosa.

Jay Barker and Buck Belue weren't undefeated...

... but they were challenged as well:)

Exactly...

... and the key to ANY running game is the offensive line.

A part of Alabama that's not talked about enough... as if Ingram and/or Richardson can get yards without some good blocking up front.

Well, look who he is handing the ball to, Ingram, and those 2 other guys would make anyone look good at QB.

It's the offensive line bro'...

... no offense to Ingram and Richardson.

The line gets a push and creates holes... don't forget that is the key.

Eugene, when Frank Gifford played at USC (I know it was a long time ago), he was an All American running back and was a cocky kid that didn't think he needed an offensive line to run the ball. There was a story going around, that the Offensive line wanted to show him that he was wrong, so in a game when USC was ahead, the line didn't block for him and Gifford got hit pretty hard. Yes, you have to have a decent line to run the ball.

Yeah, but he wins. The Tide seems to have a thing for successful but unglamorous QBs.

I remember his little sideline-tightrope to a first down in the SEC Champ Game last year. It was still fairly early in the game, but when I saw that, I knew that 'Bama was gonna win. When guys make plays like that, you know it's your day.

I don't know why some people seem to be taking the close call with the 'Hogs as an indictment of Alabama...to me, that was all about a tough team taking a highly motivated, quality opponent's best shot and finding a way to win.
