Leinart: 'Ride or die with me'

Matt Leinart moved gingerly Monday because of a football-size bruise on his back, a parting gift from Sunday's 21-14 victory over the Steelers. Leinart had a pain a little lower, too, this one on his backside, a result of comments he made Sunday night about sharing the Cardinals quarterback job with Kurt Warner. Leinart has diplomatically voiced his feelings about the situation since Warner made his first appearance last week in Baltimore. But Leinart was more strident in his comments Sunday to Yahoo.com columnist Michael Silver. "I just want them to ride or die with me," Leinart told Yahoo. "If I'm the franchise quarterback, play me and let me stumble, because I'll fight through it, and that will help me and our team in the long run. I know coaches want to win now, and I guess they have their reasons. But I don't understand it, and this switching back and forth is almost worse than getting benched."

I definately feel the man. Just be patient and continue to put up numbers and the job will be yours...

The instant access media (i.e. the internet) is the downfall of pro athletes. For the most part they aren't that bright, that's why they have agents, managers, handlers, publicists, etc. I get what Leinart is saying, I really do, and he has a point, but this phrase kills me: "I know coaches want to win now, and I guess they have their reasons." Really? What possible reasons could they have to want to win?

Now, if Leinart wants to talk about his idiot kicker getting liquored up and running his mouth, then I'll listen. I'm a hypocrite.

matt needs to quit hanging around with dumb **** blonde chicks... Its starting to rub off on him...

unless he is just a pretty boy QB with the IQ of a shrew.... which would explain why he hangs around with the dumb chicks.

Whisenhunt is blowing it big time. History tells us that QB controversies will kill a team (eg Staubach/Morton). He needs to pick one or the other because this back and forth stuff between Leinart and Warner will only divert the team's attention and deprive them of a leader.

"But I don't understand it, and this switching back and forth is almost worse than getting benched."

no, its not. and you proved Whisenhunt's point by not knowing to keep this out of the press. appears Leinart is selfish and immature, sounds like warner should be starting and playing 100% of the time.

Let's not forget that Warner, for all his faults, and his wifes hair, is a multi superbowl winning QB. He has skills. I agree with pw here, Warner needs to be guiding this flock of seagulls....Leinart could learn a lot from him....and should stop banking on his high draft pick and heisman, this isn't college my good friend....and Reggie isn't on your team anymore...

October 2, 2007  08:51 AM ET

Leinart is overated, and Warner needs to retire.

October 2, 2007  08:51 AM ET

If Leinart decides he wants to leave the desert, the Cards are screwed. They should think about that.

October 2, 2007  08:52 AM ET

How can Leinart be overrated when he still hasn't even started 16 games? No one is saying he's anything beyond a young QB with potential. How is that overrated??????

October 2, 2007  09:06 AM ET

I just hope they **** well in week five he is my bye week starter for C Palmer, Lienart can only hope to get to his former USC classmen skills.

October 2, 2007  09:12 AM ET

If Lienart would just bide his time.....two things will happen:

1) Warner playing will either result in him getting hurt AGAIN
2) He will do/say something stupid himself to botch it
2(a) GI Jane will screw things up

October 2, 2007  09:20 AM ET

Warner, though, man, the dude throws missles.

October 2, 2007  09:27 AM ET

He also gets sacked too much and fumbles way too much. Prior to this season, Warner had 31 fumbles and 76 sacks in his last 26 games. Can't win like that. Warner's record with Cards prior to this season is 3-13!

October 2, 2007  09:28 AM ET

right now warner gives them the best chance to win.i say go with him

October 2, 2007  09:29 AM ET

I vote for GI Jane

October 2, 2007  09:34 AM ET

Yeah, many good points made here, but isn't it amazing how WINNING cures all the bad things? Congrats to Arizona....

October 2, 2007  09:37 AM ET

Yea, fine for you, your a kid, there are alot of Veterans that need to win now if he could run the whole package, Warner would be on the bench, but he cant.. Selfish comment from a selfish man, See if you can take care of that kid your responsible for.

October 2, 2007  09:38 AM ET

And sacks have an awful lot to do with the line, its not just the QB

October 2, 2007  09:40 AM ET

2-2.

1-3.

That's the difference the QB switching has made. Even in that extra loss, Warner made the team look good, and gave the whole team confidence... except for Leinart apparently.

Your team is winning. Quit whining.

October 2, 2007  09:40 AM ET

Don't try defending Warner. He got benched in St. Louis and AZ for poor play. He got screwed in New York (5-4 record when he was benched), but he was getting sacked too often and fumbling too much there too.
