Untested QB joins LSU's rotation

LSU's chances of winning a national championship could rest, in large part, on the emergence of a backup quarterback whom coach Les Miles has yet to fully use or trust. Matt Flynn, a fifth-year senior, and Ryan Perrilloux, a redshirt sophomore, will share time Saturday against Florida. Flynn has patiently waited his turn to start, yet he still appears limited by a high ankle sprain sustained in early September. Three years ago, Perrilloux was considered the country's top high school recruit. Yet his personal life has been as troubled as his football ability has been breathtaking. On occasion Miles has even declined to call Perrilloux by name, referring to him as "the quarterback" or "number 11." Perrilloux's own family is reluctant to speak publicly, fearing that his tenuous standing with Miles, and his undetermined legal status, may be undermined.

Perr. is nice. He can play and will be a big time QB next season. I am still mad he didn't go to UT!

I agree he can play - and it seems from reports that he's getting his act together off the field as well. It must be a humbling feeling coming from HS where he could do anything he wanted on the field and then to redshirt. It reminded me of Cecil Collins - the RB we had several yers ago. Over 200 yards against Auburn in the second half, and then he got "too big for his breeches". Hasn't been heard from since.

Hope RP learned from Cecil's mistakes.

Nothing wrong with Miles calling a few plays that can show off Perriloux's athleticism. Plus with Flynn being a senior, I think he needs to see if this guy is going to be his QB next year.

October 3, 2007  08:37 AM ET

I am to the opinion that a 100% healthy Perrilloux is better than an 80%-85% or less Flynn. If Flynn is still bothered by the ankle injury he should go with Perrilloux. The ankle injury has been taking away from the mobility of Flynn in the pocket and his ability to take off and run. If he isn't healthy, Perrilloux is just as effective and probably more. Flynn really doesn't have much game experience over him other than he is older than Perrilloux. I just feel resting Flynn if the injury is still nagging him would be the best thing since our pass blocking has looked suspect at times. Playing against a good pass rush might be putting him at an extremely high risk of reinjuring him. Perrilloux is the more athletic and the QB of the future. He needs to be ready for next year anyways so some more big game experience would be very beneficial to him. LSU should have just as good of a chance to be this good next year also with all the returning talent and experience.

Perrilloux is just amazing, from the little I've seen. His YouTube cuts are killer.

October 3, 2007  09:34 AM ET

Perrilloux is good, he needs to stay out of trouble. I think he has much more ability than Flynn, and its nice to have a backup QB that could be a starter in most all colleges in the Nation.

His last name sounds cajun, so he fits right in.

October 3, 2007  09:42 AM ET

Yeah, Perrilloux is a French name, not sure if he's Cajun or Creole or a combination of both, but I think he's on his way. Tremendous amount of ability. He's surely grown up since the incidents he's been involved in his first two years. I'm not sure he will supplant Flynn as the starter but if I was Myles I'd get Perrilloux more game time, which it looks like he will get, because he definitely give defenses some serious different wrinkles like Tebow did at UF last year with the QB shuffle...

October 3, 2007  11:05 AM ET

I don't know how they can call "Number 11" (lol) untested. He's been getting in games and performing well. I'd be comfortable playing him. And I can't wait to see what he does against Florida. I wish Florida was still unbeaten though. It hurts LSU's strength of schedule laterwhen the BCS rankings come out.

Hey Tiger Dad,
Cecil Collins was heard from again. He's doing 10 years in a Florida prison.

October 3, 2007  02:57 PM ET

Cecil "Tha Diesel" Collins......what a story there.

October 3, 2007  03:01 PM ET

Cecil got caught stealing at LSU and later went to play with the NFL Miami, signed some big contract and got caught stealing again. (If memory serves me)

What a waste.

October 3, 2007  06:23 PM ET

Doesn't matter. 'SC will beat LSU no matter who they have under center. Florida will give the tigers all they can handle and don't discount the upset. My prediction? 'SC will be #1 by next week, but as far as I'm concerned LSU can keep it warm for us until we actually need it early next year.

The problem with many schools in the SEC is character or lack thereof. Many schools in the conference are willing to recruit guys who are a terror on the field but who are constantly in trouble. Look at Texas. Yes they are a B-12 school but the point is the same. Good players - bad character. 'SC doesn't put up with that nonsense Carroll will throw you out. Miles and a lot of other coaches will put up with it and place the guy on suspension and let him back in. Counterfeiting?!? Are you kidding me!?!? That's big time! #11 shouldn't even BE in school after that, but winning of course means more.

I remember when I was playing for 'SC they kicked a WALK ON off the team & out of the school for car theft. Schools need to get tougher with these kids. Trust me they'll benefit in the end for it. There are a lot of good kids out there who have good character.

October 3, 2007  07:05 PM ET

He hasn't been punished legaly for counterfeiting. I believe that supports the idea that maybe he got mixed up with the wrong crowd and got associated with the real criminals. Counterfeiting is a felony if he really did something he probably would be off the team and in the court room. The only thing he is guilty of is being stupid. He got in trouble for trying to sneak into a casino with another person's ID(his brother's). The guy was the #1 recruit in the nation he had been all over the newspapers and didn't expect one person around to notice who he was. Now that is dumb!

October 3, 2007  07:14 PM ET

How can you go and blame other schools for problem recruits. Reggie Bush has been linked to breaking NCAA rules of accepting tons of money. The only reason they can't proceed with the investigation is because he paid off the people who knew and the NCAA doesn't have a very good central governing body for football. Also O.J. is a former USC player. Are you going to tell me he hasn't gotten associated with the wrong people? Are you also going to tell me we should just give up on all of these kids? Some kids have rough past and need someone their for support or have lacked someone to mentor them. I will admit I don't understand the actions of some of these students, but sometimes they need someone to set them straight.

USC is the last school that should cast a stone at another.. I'm not even a fan of the SEC.

October 3, 2007  09:49 PM ET

USC a shining example of college football? "Just a Fan" discounted that real quick. By the way, I don't think Carroll was the coach in '93. Maybe they did kick a guys of for "minor" things, though I don't see car theft as a minor thing. But was USC any good in the early '90's? They definitely weren't near the dynasty they have today. And Texas? I would put the character of UT players well above USC and I am an OU fan. Sounds like Old Trojan '93 doesn't have a clue about anything outside of LA!

October 3, 2007  09:54 PM ET

yeah you can't just throw someone out for one minor thing. for some people football is their lives. last i heard of maurice clarrett, as soon as he was out of football he got arrested, haven't heard anything since.

Hey Trojan 93, look at the USC sideline next game and tell me there aren't a slew of felons with pads on. There is NO WAY that a college football team gets that many studs that are clean and aren't violating NCAA rules. USC will face sanctions, it's only a matter of time
