Why Mets won't hire Valentine

08:20 AM ET 10.02 | Bobby Valentine isn't holding his breath that he'll be the next manager of the Mets. Though Valentine's name has surfaced in recent weeks as Jerry Manuel's potential successor, a person close to Valentine yesterday indicated there still are lingering wounds between the Mets and the former manager that likely won't heal anytime soon. Valentine has solid relationships with several members of the Mets' hierarchy, but remains at odds with principal owner Fred Wilpon, who fired him following the 2002 season. Valentine thought at the time that Wilpon lied to him. Valentine was made to believe his fate and that of general manager Steve Phillips were intertwined. But Phillips remained as the GM after Valentine was fired.

Last time Bobby V was in ny , no free agent would come to ny because they didnt want to ply for him. It seems that only the media loves Bobby V. YOU rarely hear a player talking about how good he is. he has gotten like 3 or 4 interviews without being hired.

unless the press was in the room nobody knows the truth. what went on between Bobby and Fred. Things can change . I think Fred is smart he knows he needs to win to make money . He would put away his ego to make things right. Both guys are stuborn but at the end of the day its about the organizations best interest .

Agree with you the Mets do seem to need morethan Bobby Valentine. But atleast getting ride of worthless Jerry Manuel as manager is a pretty darn-good start. Surprised it has taken this long for Fred Wilfon to see the light and get get Manuel out.... The Mets could bring in anyone as a managerial successor and the Mets will end up improving.

Imagine Bobby Valentine will be named Manager in Seattle. Dave Martinez currently with Florida might be a pretty good fit with the New York Mets.

Valentine is a totally whacked out, camera hogging goofball. The only way any team should hire him is if they wish to bring the circus to town!

When Jerry Manuel managed the WHite Sox, anytime things weren't going right he'd just thump his bible and retreat to the sanctity of the managers office, locking out the media. He's a good person, but a lousy baseball manager.

And horrible middle infielder during his playing days

Bobby comes from the old school way of managing. He doesn't pamper these Prima Donnas'. He's a good manager, just maybe a little out of time I guess.

The Mets were actually decent when he coached them....keyword "decent." GO YANKEES!

October 2, 2010  06:29 PM ET

As a life long Mets fan I really have no idea what they can do to right this ship. It really is sad.

Been there, done that, bring in all fresh blood!

October 3, 2010  12:03 AM ET

If Manuel and Manaya are gone, they need to take the entire Mets medical staff with them because that organization has been snake bit. Maybe a Priest with some exorcism experience could be called for good measure!

Those broke-**** Madoff chumped Wilpons need to sell the team. Fred thinks he bought the Dodgers.

October 3, 2010  07:41 AM ET

Best rumor so far is Larry Bowa as new mgr. He'd get a lot more out of this team than Jerry or Willie were able to.

October 3, 2010  05:07 PM ET

Valentine won't be going to the Mets because New York is going to hire Joe Torre. Bobby Valentine will wind up replacing Bobby Cox in Atlanta.

Valentine won't be going to the Mets because New York intends to hire Joe Torre. More than likely Valentine will replace Bobby Cox in Atlanta.
