11:02 AM ET 10.03 | Brigham Young University's worst start to a football season since 1973 has cost defensive coordinator Jaime Hill his job. Hill, in his fifth year on the BYU coaching staff, was fired by coach Bronco Mendenhall on Saturday morning during a meeting that also involved athletic director Tom Holmoe. Hill said he believes he's a "scapegoat" for the Cougars' 1-4 start, which included Friday night's 31-16 loss to Utah State in which the Cougars gave up 434 yards of offense to the Aggies, including 242 on the ground. Hill was given the option to resign or be fired, and chose the latter, according to a source close to the situation.

Karma baby. "Oh, we're too good for MWC and the PAC10 won't let us play... that's okay we will be the Notre Dame of the west." Yeah, the Notre Dame that Charlie Weis coached for most of his tenure.

Well he cant collect unemployment if he resigns, duh.

Hmmm... coaching collapse on the eve of becoming independent in football? Not a good omen for BYU.

Kind of a small time move for a program who wants to be big time.

October 3, 2010  03:24 PM ET

That's not being a scapegoat. A scapegoat is if the RB coach gets fired because the defense isn't producing.

October 3, 2010  03:34 PM ET

The powers that be at BYU need to accept the fact that they do not possess a top-tier program. It's just that simple. This talk of them going indy is a joke. Nothing personal against BYU, just callin' it like I see it.

BTW, why not fire the HC as well? Mendenhall hasn't accomplished a damned thing.

October 3, 2010  03:55 PM ET

You're not a scapegoat, you're a fired goat!

October 3, 2010  06:08 PM ET

Instead of Bronco Mendenhall being a real man, and taking the blame for not keeping recruiting up, he takes it out on his coordinator. It's really easy to sway the general public when their is someone to blame, and Jaime Hill was that victim. We like to call that a scapegoat. Now it does not matter how bad they do, even at 1-11. Bronco Mendenhall won't be to blame. Good job. **** move.

That's the life of a college coach. Produce, or else sell insurance.

Agree Harley, Waiting for a former BYU Defensive Coordinator named Jaime Hill to provide an insurance quote first thing Monday Morning

With BYU starting off the season 1 and 4 and losing to Utah State; The Athletic Director, should have manned-up and "canned" Bronco Mendenhall and his whole Cougar coaching staff, rather than just firing Hill.

Jaime Hill will probaly be getting a phone call from Sabin or another SEC program for a DC position now

October 3, 2010  07:35 PM ET

Face it Jaime, you are not good. That is why you were fired. Later on and I hope you enjoy your new position at the local high school.

October 3, 2010  07:37 PM ET

The Y in BYU stands for "Jamie Yielded too many points and yards".

Good point, as BYU should/could go to the ACC and probably would win that conference on a regular basis.

I can certainly understand why BYU believes it has the appeal to be a football-independent and sign a big TV contract.

Not.

This would be one of those schadenfreude moments.
