Surgery to end Trojan's season

Joe McKnight, Allen Bradford, Hershel Dennis and Desmond Reed found themselves in a relatively unfamiliar situation Wednesday. The four USC tailbacks, relegated to minor backfield roles through the first four games, were competing for significant playing time in Saturday's game against Stanford. With sophomore Stafon Johnson almost certainly out because of a foot bruise and C.J. Gable opting Wednesday for season-ending abdominal surgery, the coaching staff is searching for starter Chauncey Washington's running mate.

I think you guys should suit up bigmouth Old Trojan 93, since anyone can get a dolla' fitty behind that line.

Have fun kicking the crap out of a bunch of pencil pushing Stanford nerds. Its like UT playing Vanderbilt.

The S.I. Cover Jinx is in full effect. Moody transfered, and now Gable is out for the season.

Everybody knows they got a small army of backs up there, so . . .

October 4, 2007  11:06 AM ET

True that. Their best back however is the one guy not trying to play running back. Stanley Havili is a good one at fullback.

Hova you're right, we came into the season with 10 All-American running backs. Now going into game 5, we are without Moody (transfer), Coleman (transfer), Gable (surgery), Johnson (day to day), and Green (broken bone in foot). Thats 2 5-star and 3 4-star recruits out. But we still have 5 All-Americans left.

This is just a set-up for their upcoming losses, they will blame injuries so they can guarantee a bloated pre-season ranking next year (again).

So true!

October 4, 2007  02:33 PM ET

Technically I think you have 4. Isn't McKnight banged up too?

My grandma could line up and run through the holes the O-line is creating......and she's got 1 wooden leg.

October 4, 2007  03:15 PM ET

Theyll be fine.. as long as they have stafon johnson and chauncey washington.. Those two guys take up most of the rushing attempts anyway..

USC wins by 28 this week.

October 4, 2007  04:20 PM ET

THanks SI for putting a jinx on the USC backfield. Booty has looked horrible. And now half of the 10 RBz mentioned in the SI cover page has transfered or gotten hurt.

October 4, 2007  04:30 PM ET

Yeah that's right Fornacis, and after I'm done getting my dollar fifty, as a reward maybe you'll let me have fun chocking your sister when you are through with her.

CW has having some shoulder issues, Bradford is getting a lot of reps with the first team (none of us are concerned with AB's ability), it'll be a good chance for him to show he deserves carries on a weekly basis. I'll be nice to see McKnight get some good reps like vs. WSU. Reed played well last week too. Even Hershel looked good. Havili needs to make up for those drops last week. New OL with Heberer, should be interesting to see Herring, Parsons and Lewis get reps too.
